For Hayko - today (9th) is the 86th anniversary of Kemal Ataturk founding the Republican Peoples Party in Turkey. LakeGeneve Posted October 8, 2009 Report Share Posted October 8, 2009 We sort of forgot the 6th of Oct 1976 anniversary of the massacre of Thammasat students which resulted in 46 deaths (official) and over 100 (unofficial). Victims families still call for an investigation to account for those who have not been accounted for. And let us not forget that last year then Prime Minister Samak stated on CNN that only 1 student died in 76! (He was Deputy Interior Minister at the time). Violence broke out when several thousand students took to the streets demanding the military government step down. They are also calling for an early introduction of a constitution. Confrontation Today demonstrators barricaded streets leading to government offices. Witnesses say protesters threw stones and petrol bombs but were driven back by police and troops using live rounds. Several people fell after shots were fired - reportedly the work of snipers. There have also been reports of fire engines and buses being commandeered and driven into tanks. Clashes between troops and students also occurred at Thammasat University after students began returning from the street demonstrations. The students are angry with Field Marshal Thanom and his regime - successive military governments have ruled Thailand since 1947. The field marshal abolished the existing constitution in a coup in November 1971, and less than 10 days ago 13 pro-democracy campaigners were arrested for calling for a permanent constitution. After a peaceful protest march of about 200,000 people yesterday, the government pledged to introduce a new constitution within 12 months. But there is considerable public scepticism about the government's promises - the last constitution took 10 years to be introduced. Bangkok is now under a state of emergency. On January 23 of this year a ceasefire agreement was concluded between the United States of America and the Vietnamese Democratic Republic.At its meeting on October 16 the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Storting decided to award the Peace Prize for 1973 to Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, the two chief negotiators who succeeded in arranging the ceasefire after negotiating for nearly four years. For many long and bitter years the civilian population of Vietnam and the fighting troops engaged on both sides had borne the sufferings and privations of war. This was a war that concerned not only Vietnam and its people; it was a war moreover that had poisoned the atmosphere in countries and between countries all over the world.
