When a co-worker screws up........

For a while now, I've been dealing with an issue here at the jail that has been bothering me.  Seems that a person that I've known for the last 15 years has recently been doing some things that are......well, lets just say inappropriate.  While not illegal (at this point!!!), what he may be doing is facilitating illegal activities by allowig persons with criminal histories to enter into the jail on visit days to visit thier friends or relatives in return for some type of gratuity.  I know this to be a fact as I intercepted a phone call to him today and heard a complete conversation with one of these "visitors"  ( yes, I can do this in a correctional facility as the only conversations that are "confidential" are those between the inmate and his attorney ).  What makes me very angry is that last week when I suspected this I went directly to him and gave him a coutesy "talking to" which basically consisted of the phrase " I don't know exactly what your doing, but you better stop and you better stop right now".   I'm upset about this issue.  I'm upset that someone I liked would sacrifice his integrity and jeopardize his job for something so small. Something that could eventially get someone hurt or killed in this environment.  As a supervisor though, I went out of my way to speak with him to try to correct his actions, apparently though he didn't take the hint.  Well my report was submitted today about this incident, and all I can say is it wasn't pretty.  If this man is lucky he will get a lengthy suspension for his actions ( and a definate "reality check" ). If not, something like this could lead to loss of his job.   What are some of your thoughts on this?

research the penal code for the state of hawaii. a gratuity, such as money, gifts, whatever, has value. for this mope to be accepting "gratuities" to allow someone to enter a detention facility unlawfully then he is in fact breaking the law. he is a party to bribery. bribery is illegal in all states.

Main Entry:

1bribe

1 : money or favor given or promised in order to influence the judgment or conduct of a person in a position of trust 2 : something that serves to induce or influence

instead of confronting him you should have sent an anonymous letter to his supervisor detailing his activities. when working in a jail facility u have to be very careful. you have now let this guy know that you are on to him and may have set yourself up for assault or worse by the inmates that he has been dealing with

Hi Ron,

Had I actually witnessed the "exchange" of money or gifts today, this situation definately would have taken a more serious turn, and yes, at that point a crime would have taken place and would have been classifed as a "Class C " felony wich is punishable with imprisonment of up to 5 years. Based on what I had heard though, there is a definate violation of the "standards of conduct" that we are required to abide by and thus administrative action is likely to follow.

As this individual falls under my section of supervision, it actually is my responsability to first address the problem....I did. Will he now stop what he is doing now that the "heat" is turned up? I guess we'll have to wait and see, and yes. I'm always careful working in this environment....bad things DO happen.

Aloha,

Dan

Your co-worker's call................if it's against policy, then it needs to be addressed accordingly, friend or no friend. If you just look the other way, than you're as wrong as your co-worker.........I don't think that you would put your career on the line for another employee?

Hi Ed,

No way....he did wrong and I called him on it. My report is submitted and the "wheels are in motion". I'm upset with him because I've known him for a very long time, but the one thing I can't stand and will not tolerate is someone who is "dirty". If this man were a true friend then he would not have put me in the position that I'm in. He is solely responsable for his actions.

Aloha,

Dan
