Lese majeste law was born around those same times. One snitch [informer, ilmiantaja] accused Augustus'* sisters son's Appuleia Varilla for lese majeste, because Appuleia Varilla had said insulting remarks about Augustus who had been heightened to the status of god, and from Tiberius and his mother and because Tiberius was in adulterous relationship  even though Tiberius was emperors relative. The latter thing was seen as matter undrer Julias law. Emperor demanded, that the high treason charges had to be delivered and punish for the possible unrespectful comments about Augustus, but the insults about him he did not want to be investigated. When the consul asked from the emperor how he feels about the claimed insults by the Appuleia about emperors mother he stood silent. But in the next senate meeting he asked in the name of his mother, that no one would be set chargest against about the comments made against him** whatever the circumstances. Tiberius relased Appuleia from the lese majeste charges. He instructed the senate to drop the most tough adulterypunishment and suggested instead, that his relatives according to the old tradition would banish him 200 Roman miles away from the capital. His loverl, Manlius, was denied living in Italy and Africa." Ok, this was quite a surprising chapter in the classic book by Tacitus, the Annals that I was reading. What it should in my opinion reveal to the reader who is familiar with modern Thailand is that Thailand is still resembling a lof of ancient Rome in 17 AD, that means, 1991 years ago when it comes to lese majeste and how it is handled and used by patrons and the heads of the state. If you read how the case was handled back then, you can see how Tiberius actually dismissed the lese majeste charges and how it relates to current state of the Thailand. I won't ask the next obvious question that ofcourse comes to mind when reading about lese majeste 2000 years ago and about the situation in 2008 but that question has been over and over again asked by foreigners.

*[Tiberius was the Emperor in the year these events take place, 17 AD, and Augustus had died in the year 14 AD as the previous emperor]**or her, the mother, due to the Finnish language it is bit difficult to decipher is the meaning of pronoun here the Emperor or Emperors mother

when the national anthem is played at 8am or 6pm it is the choice of people to stand to attention or not but peer pressure in thai society especialy since the last coup has made it impossible for people to make that choice

what are the elite society in thailand so afraid to keep this old law in place

gatsby truly you have no idea of the monarchy's role in helping thailand to be the only south eastern asian country to be prospering, to be the ONLY country EVER to be debt free to the IMF having paid back all it's loans, to have the one of the strongest stock markets in the world percapita size in the world.... There is a reason thai people where the king around theirs necks, have them in their homes, and in their business places, in thailand and around the world.
