Sumary of Game

Liverpool will take a slender one goal lead to Turin after goals from Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia gave them a hard fought 2-1 victory over Juventus in tonight's Champions League Quarter Final First Leg at Anfield.

Rafa's men dominated the first 45 minutes of this emotionally charged clash and were good value for the 2-0 half time lead given to them by Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia. But Juventus grabbed the upper-hand and a crucial away goal after the interval through defender Fabio Cannavaro.

The Reds took the lead after just 10 minutes when Garcia flicked Gerrard's cross to Sami Hyypia at the far post and he finished with some aplomb, volleying hard passed Buffon.

Hyypia was only playing because Mauricio Pellegrino couldn't, but he returned to partner Jamie Carragher in the centre of defence and made a vital contribution at both ends of the pitch.

And if Hyypia's opener had the Kop on it's feet, Luis Garcia's second after 25 minutes will have lifted the elated fans right off them.

There seemed little threat as Garcia ran on to the ball 25 yards out, but he unleashed a superb dipping volley that gave Buffon no chance.

Liverpool threatened to run away with the tie when Baros twice went close to making it three, but they would be forced to defend resolutely as Juventus came forward after the break.

Capello's men had come close to a goal in the first half through Del Piero and Ibrahimovic, but they had to wait until the 64th minute for their away goal and when it came, it came from a unlikely source. Defender Fabio Cannavaro on hand to head passed Carson and give the Italians hope for the return leg.

Liverpool will make the journey to Turin with confidence after more than matching their much vaunted opponents.
