Thailand to change name to 'Siam' - but keep 'Thailand'

New campaign to use 'Siam' and 'Thailand'

BANGKOK: -- An heir of Thailand's first interior and education minister has called for the government to alternately use 'Siam' and 'Thailand' as the offcial name of the Thai kingdom.

M.L. Panadda Disakul, the Deputy Governor of Pathum Thani Province on the outskirts of Bangkok, who is the heir of late Prince Damrong Rajanuparp, the first Thai interior and education minister, as well as the first Thai army chief,

noted that 'Siam' is a historically dignified and auspicious name, designated by King Rama IV, and it should be honourably preserved.

"Siam is an auspiciously dignified name, as it was designated by His Majesty King Rama IV, and it represents the longly-proud history of the Thai kingdom. So, it should be re-used as the official name of the Thai kingdom, alternately with Thailand", she said.

"An official campaign should be launched to promote the use of the alternate national name among Thai youths and the general public", she added.

She proposed the idea when she met Culture Minister Uraiwan Thienthong and senior Fine Arts Department officials yesterday.

M.L. Panadda is also the head of Prince Damrong Rajanuparp Museum and Library, where Mrs. Uraiwan and the senior officials visited yesterday.

She pointed out that many countries have more than one national name, such as the Netherlands and Holland; the United States and America; the Great Britain, the United Kingdom and England; Switzerland and Helvetia; Germany and Deutschland; and Japan and Nippon.

A previous Thai government changed the national name from 'Siam' to 'Thailand' in 1939 amid the opposition of a large number of Thais, she said.

Although I don't agree with some of the arguments in the article (i.e. england is a part of great brittain and great brittain is in fact a part of the UK... as is germany just the english translation of deutschland..) I want to hear what you think about it.?

I like the name Siam (even though it should be Sayam because that's how we actually pronounce it). Perhaps this name might provoke some feeling of nationalism or conservatism. For example, I, for one, don't know how we called the country Siam in the first place.

are you googling right now??

but yeah i agree with you that it might provoke the feeling of nationalism....ive got the vibe already.

For somebody who is supposed to be a govenor, her remarks are rather ignorant. If she's going to start quoting about other countries she could at least do some research before coming out with totally incorrect statements.

Does this mean we have to call the people Siamese instead of Thai?

As for the name, I definitely prefer Thailand.

the world is used now to Thailand,Ii as a farang see no reason to change it. it happens only in strange regimes that they change names: congo called zaire and now called congo again and birma called now myamar. but it is up to the Thai people; you are a democracy, you can vote for the right party

Personally I think that Siam is a much more exotic and romantic name than Thailand. One of my Thai friends argues that Siam is not a pure Thai word and is therefore not appropriate.

The book "The King and I" followed by the musical and the movie "Anna and the King of Siam" is about Anna Leonowens, a British woman who came to Thailand as an English teacher for the Royals during the reign of HRH King Mongkut or Rama IV. It conjurs up the romanticism that is inherently Thai and totally unique in Asia.

What if Siam Square was called "Thai or Thailand Square"? Yuck! It doesn't sound right at all!

My vote goes to Siam!

In fact I could read it, but would probably take more than an hour with a lot of cursing and a giant headache! Yes, I can read but with the speed of a little kid!
