PHUKET: Latest statistics for Phuket resort occupancy rates show a decline in February and March that contradicts Phuket airport passenger figures.

While the number of arrivals and departures by air on Phuket continues to grow, figures from the Thai Hotels Association (Southern Branch) reflect a general year-on-year decline in three-star and four-star categories, with five-stars steadier.

Most alarming perhaps is the decline in four-star numbers for Phuket - down by 12.9 percent in February and 14.31 percent in March.

This is the extreme of the general average decline of 8.89 percent in February - from 89.60 percent in 2011 to 80.71 percent in 2012 - and 7.1 percent in March - from 79.02 percent in 2011 to 71.92 percent in 2012.

Four-star establishments dipped from a very-high 95.53 percent in February 2011 to 82.39 in February 2012, and were down by 14.31 percent to 65.80 percent in March.

Five-stars, on the other hand, dipped 2.02 percent from 2011 to 2012 in February but recovered by going up 2.14 percent to 82.73 percent in March. Three-stars lost 1.96 percent in February and a further 9.11 percent to 67.24 percent in March.

Phuket airport passenger numbers levelled off in February but rose by 8.43 percent in March, with a total of 2.7 million arrivals and departures for the first quarter of 2012.
