Free wifi

I kind of have a theory that in 5 years we will all be able to get wifi access for free almost anywhere in the world. Hey, maybe I'm right and maybe I'm wrong. Who cares, not me!

If, like me, u live in a rathole, need ur computer for almost all work, and get terminally depressed staying in ur room all day, wifi access is a modern miracle. But, I am struggling to find free wifi in BKK. Yes there are the hotels, but it's a little embarrassing to sit in their lobbies every day! Yes there are Starbucks, Au Bon Petit and so on, but u pay a lot for these services. And no, I am not a miser....much :) I just hate to be in Starbucks all the time!

So I figured why not build a list of free wifi access places in BKK and elsewhere in Thailand to share among TFers. I will start:

Gallery F-Stop, Suhkumvit 20. Opening hours 10-10 (I think...need to check that). No smoking but u can smoke outside of course. Food not bad but very vegetarian. Staff are friendly and u can look at the latest gallery exhibition too.

"Free" is never quite free of course.....u usually need to buy coffee etc. to be allowed to camp in a place.

If others help me I will gladly consolidate and post a list on some websites. If, on the other hand, a list already exists somewhere can someone point me to it?

Have a good day TF.

Irish Xchange pub, soi convent.

Free WiFi - fast too. Also if you need power they'll let you plug in. Connects automatically with no messing around.

I was in O'Reilly's the other day (Silom/Thaniya) and the waitress said they had WiFi for free, but she had to call the manager to get a code. The manager came down and wrote the code, but he got it wrong twice! Even when he got it right I couldn't connect. They got the idea from the Xchange but are not ready for serious use yet.

Consider getting a Hutch CDMA aircard. Around Bangkok I get 30-50 kps (not fast but better than GSM). Outside of Bangkok I get 80 kps. Fixed unlimited data package is dirt cheap. It's not broadband but a useful back up.

Starbucks pricing is a total rip off...
