ElectrO
Hi, I am looking for a decent book, that allows me to learn to read Thai. I saw one book that showed you how you should place your tongue to get the sounds correctly. The only problem, the Alphabet (according to my thai friends) was phonetically wrong, so it wasn't good in that way. I believe, if I can learn the alphabet and can learn to read, Speaking will become alot more fun and easier for me. Just like when speaking English, you should learn the alphabet. Any help would be appreciated. E
zdownlow
I picked up 'Learning Thai: A Unique and Practical Approach" from the publisher Odeon Store that explains the writing system in more detail than other books I have seen. It doesn't seem to come with any tapes though. The Thai for Beginners book from Paiboon Publishing is a pretty good general book with writing practice (but not much explanation) and some good recordings. The language skills are all intermingled, but I actually think listening practice helps more with pronunciation than reading, especially when learning to distinguish tones or troublesome sounds. There's really only a few sounds a native English speaker would have trouble with, like the ng or the k/g t/d p/b distinctions - which just have to do with voicing and aspiration. But long term reading is the way to go for reinforcing vocab and learning new words.

dumper
Hi ElectrO, Have a look at this great, free site - http://www.markoinbangkok.com/thailesson.htm Why should I bother with Crvenazvezda?s guide? Because you?re too lazy and tightfisted to spend three months at a language school and you?re hoping for an easy shortcut. LOL It claims you will be able to read Thai in one month. Mind you I've spent three days on lesson 1. :? Which is supposed to be one day... Are there any memory systems/ learning techniques to help you remember Thai script ? I find it time consuming and difficult to think : Ã = R Ê = S etc etc Any advice anyone ?
dumper
Hi Stuart (tamtroy), I've been looking at the website you suggested. Especially the Thai alphabet page - http://www.learningthai.com/gorgai_001.htm It is helpful to a degree but still a bit baffling ! I'm just not getting it. Sorry to sound stupid. When it says chicken then starts with the G in Thai script. I still don't really associate that letter with chicken ! Am I missing something here ? dumper
Thanks wasabi. I'll try and associate letters with words like you suggested. In which case the alphabet section of the learningthai.com site is quite a good place to start.

dumper
Hi clemenf, I'm using markoinbangkok.com to give me batches of letters to try and remember. Then I look at learningthai.com and use the alphabet page as suggested by wasabi to try and remember them. I can't use those nasty links as an excuse for distracting me as I print everything off and read it from paper. Nearly finished lesson 1 now !
