SleeplessAdrian
My old AMD K6-2 350mhz that has been with me for several years (since 1998, if I recall) has went into coma (in technical terms, I think the motherboard has gone bust by electrical surge) I went browsing into a local auction site, and I found 1 particular shop selling used computer parts, of which he listed 3 "Super 7 socket" motherboards, which cost around RM 100(for motherboard only) to RM 120 which also comes with a K6-2 450mhz processor. OR I should change it to a new processor, motherboard and of course RAM. Works out nearly RM 500. Cheapest option: CELERON 326 (Socket 775) - RM 180 ASROCK 775I65GV (Socket 775 mobo - 145 480W TSUNAMI POWER SUPPLY/24 PIN - RM 55 512MB DDR 400 RAM - RM 190 Total: about RM 380 (without RAM, cause I've already got DDR RAM) By the way, which one is easier to overclock? AMD Sempron or a Celeron? I thought Celerons are harder to overclock because of the locked multiplier.
i_love_som_tam
unplug the life support and let it die a quiet death. go for the duo core pentium processor. you won't be disappointed. cheap is not the way to go for performance.

AMD processors are cheaper, but their mobos are more expensive Intel processors are more expensive, but their mobos are cheaper. I've been a AMD user since the 386 days and even my 386 is now resting in peace. (No death, just that I've upgraded to K6-2)

(No death, just that I've upgraded to K6-2) Adrian, I admit AMD do perform better than intel...but bear in mind...AMD CPU require a powerful cooling fan as its temp is much higher than intel(Highend Cooling Fans r not cheap...)and i'm not sure how good is the support for AMD in M'sia....Support in SGP for AMD suxs...Eventually the price for a AMD & intel does work out to be almost the same... I'll choose intel..cos 3yr warranty & good support..no worries of compatibilty issues Intel Pentium 3.0GHZ Intel D865 Mainboard 2GB DDR1 PC3200 160SATA x 02 Nvidia 256MB FX5200
i_love_som_tam
I admit AMD do perform better than intel... that depends on the program that you are running. if u are running basic, low speed programs, the AMD is fine. If you get into gaming or video editing that requires a faster processor then go with the pentium. stay away from the celeron and AMD.
TLOS4me
Keep it going man! It's a classic. I've a P2 400Mhz that I use for a desktop and a P3 700Mhz laptop that is on its 3rd mother board. If you do decide to go with a new system, you don't have to go with the absolutely newest (expen$ive) system, the slightly new stuff is always cheaper. My 2 bytes worth... My 2 bytes worth... Just a while ago I went into the local auction sites and several units of Pentium 4 Socket 478 and a few guys offering me a Socket 478 mobo with SDRAM and DDR 266 capability. Hmmm..heavy heart to retire the K6-2 350. I'm not keen into latest processors as they are obsolute very quickly
SleeplessAdrian
Did you check Sungei Wang already? Some stores were selling older components last time I was there. At least move up to Athlon! No Rob, not Sungei Wang, but Plaza Low Yatt, which is opposite of Sungei Wang. It's a haven of electronics; computers, handphone and more. Something like Sim Lim Square in Singapore. .Yeap I know there is one shop selling used computer components. Tons. I once boughta Mobile Athlon XP 2200+ and overclocked it a little, due to motherboard limitation. Then I returned the proc due to cache defect and got back my money..and sold off the mobo.Still keeping the DDR RAM though
