The tourist buses that are booked in travel agencies on Khao San road offer very cheap fares, for example 300 baht VIP bus to Surat Thani. If a Thai would book the same bus at the public bus terminal, it would cost at least 500 baht.
Unfortunately, the reason for the cheap fares is that the bus companies actually STEAL from their passengers. Someone will go through the rucksacks in the middle of the night and remove any valuables.
I thought this was a rumour untill it actually happened to me. I lost 3,000 baht and my credit card, which was maxed out the next day (fortunately, I got reimbursed for that). The theives were very proffessional and didn't even bother taking my passport, my bank card, even my $500 camera.
I'm not saying don't take tourist buses, I still do just because they are so cheap and convenient. Just make sure NEVER to leave any valuables in your rucksack, carry everything on you and you'll be fine.
