You see, I have a 128 MB memory stick product by

(now that I have your attention...or not...)

And I do not know: does it matter when it is so old that it does not have that U3 label printed on top of it? Does it affect somehow to the ability to run programs straight from the stick? The stick is otherwise fine...but just need to know what does it REALLY mean when the USB-memory has U3 compliance....

Read this

and this ..

My advise: Just throw in 20-30 euros and buy a 1GB USB Stick

Alrightie, the thing was that does it matter if the stick ain't got that stamp on it? I run for example EssentialPIM organizer directly from bit more new stick, but that did not have any stamp in itself or in the package either. So I was thinkin' if you have portable software like Firefox etc, is the U3 just ensurance behind those links posted that "yeah, we got this cool compliance standard and your portable software should work on this stick if your software also speaks about U3" but does not say anything about the fact that in fact, all portable software runs from any old stick?

but just need to know what does it REALLY mean when the USB-memory has U3 compliance....

I just found out that a U3 stick has an interface on it and built in password protection.

Have you been to this site yet, those apps probably run on your old one.

Yeah thanks, you got right to the point I tried to figure out after I posted my prev. message. OK, I check the portableapps site. I think this U3 thing is just meant for the technically handicapped ppl...;)

The software.u3.com link has this gem "Carry and run applications on any PC*. U3 smart drives come with an intuitive interface and built in password protection to secure your data." * sayin "Windows 2000/XP"...well, that about covers the "any PC" then :-P Oh and also, fails to mention, thing that I have thought about: does not work on most internet cafes as they have blocked a) USB ports B) rights to run applications from USB sticks.....so, there is your "any PC"...:(

I'm trying to figure out what is the angle of U3...or better yet - the idea behind the "free" Suite and portable apps dev. groups. Maybe it is indeed giving life to the old sticks, I guess that the U3, there is some hidden cost, must be....Why else there would be this portableapps.com. Hmmm, I wonder...AS they seem to be indeed in competition, U3 being marketed to the USB manufacturers and program developpers at the same time...

Oh well, I think my

gets a new life as Firefox launcher...

the one you have is way too small but maybe enough for what you need.

I always have 5 in my pocket everyday.

2 one gb's ( crappy brand name..had to return them 2 times because they screwed up and lost all my data (one year quarantee)

my other 3 are kingston brand

a 512 mb

a 1 GB

a 2gb

solid product!!!! no problems, and come with 5 year guarantees
