Do you turn the control button up or down?

errrr I am scared to fall for a trap LOL but i made a huge mistake with my brand new air con about 10 years ago.. I turned it to 30 and complained that it didnt work, dad bought a shitty AC... dad looked at the remote control... he said the lower temp, the colder.... and knocked my head softly with that remote.... turn it down a bit

so... whats the correct answer?
