I am very happy with his new book 'After Dark'. This is my signed copy... ;PAny fans here?P1000719.jpg PLOT SUMMARY Alienation, a returning motif in the works of Murakami, is the central theme in this novel set in a major Japanese city over the course of one night. Main characters include Mari, a 19-year-old woman, who is spending the night reading in a Denny's. There she meets Takahashi, a trombone-playing student, who also knows Mari's sister Eri and insists that the group of them have hung out before. Meanwhile, Eri is being watched in her sleep by someone sinister. Eri also suffers from social withdrawal, a condition often referred to as hikikomori. Mari crosses ways with a fighting champion, now working as a manager in a love hotel (whom Takahashi knows and referred to Mari), a Chinese prostitute who has been beaten and stripped of everything in this same love hotel, and a sadistic computer expert. The story takes place in a world between reality and dreams. Some cool link that I have posted before: http://www.blueblanket.net/Steph/Make/Visual/Perfect/(click on the images to go through the story)

CuteB> you're right there are more good Japanese writers. Banana Yoshimoto as well to add another one..

Stegee>it is

Jang>yeah that was the first book I read...

Jazz>Spootnick Sweetheart is ok, but I love Kafka on the shore!

Fedor>I consider 'The Wind-Up brid Chronicle' and 'Hard-boiled wonderland and the end of the world' as his best books.

Also I like all his stories very much. 'Underground' is a good non-fiction book about the Aum leaded by Shoko Asahara.

I have read all his books & stories in English. There are still stories which are not translated into English. Some of those are translated by others

than his official translators Alfred Birnbaum, Jay Rubin and Philip Gabriel and to be found on the internet.
