When will people wake up and learn.......

A few days back here in Honolulu there was an incident where a 23 year old man kidnapped and threw a 2 year old baby off of one of the freeway overpasses, instantly killing him.  I don't think there are words that describe the sickening feeling that came over everyone I knew when they heard about this, I mean, I was having a few drinks with some friends and when this popped up on the news, the whole bar became silent !!!   In the days that followed, certain details started to emerge about how the killer had "methamphetamine" in his system and how this individual lived in the same apartment complex as the baby's family and how he would often exibit strange behavior running up and down the outside stairs in the middle of the night yelling and screaming and how strange cars would often be parked in the driveway to the building at odd hours of the night with thier occupants visiting the killers apartment ( obvious drug activity !!!).  What really sickens me is that the parents of this baby knew this, and yet still "sometimes used this same man as a "part time" babysitter!!!!  ( oh, and yes....the mom tested positive for "methamphetamine" only days prior).  The "father" of the baby?.....well it appears that earlier in the morning the baby had got out of the apartment and was wandering on the street and was found and returned to the apartment by the Honolulu Police. Where was he and how could he allow this to happen ?.....well,  I'll give you a reason.  Some of the prisoners here where I work actually know this guy and related to me that he is also addicted to "methamphetamine" and was "high" and totally unaware of what was going on that morning....makes me sick!!!  How is it that there is sooooooo much information about the dangers of "ICE" (methamphetamine) and the physical and mental (yes..."meth" does actually cause psychosis) damage it does to a person and the totally insane things it may make a person do, yet people still do it ???  Totally puzzles me.  Sorry if this journal appeared to ramble on, but this case actually makes me sick to my stomach.  What's worse, is that I'll bet this individual will now use the excuse of " I was high, I didn't know what I was doing" defense or the "I'm insane" defense......BULLSHIT!!! If a person has enough thought to put that drug into his or her system, then the are aware of what they are doing.......PERIOD.  What do you think ?.......

No defense is suitable, of course there will be those that will argue about this tragic death............at 23, the addict is still a kid...........add the drugs, you can forget about him as a human being........waste the sucker out in the bush! One less druggie to worry about.......

Lots of drugs cause Psychosis, I grew up in that sort of environment people taking class A drugs in my home as a kid glorifying drug use. I had an amphetamine addict stepfather sectioned for drug induced schizophrenia as a teenager and got out of that scene when I was old enough to think for myself. People when you gonna learn if you mess with your brain too much it wont work forever.

23? just a kid? when exactly are people supposed to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions? 23 is NOT a kid.

Ah just reread your comment Afook, yeah, even with time and 'recovery', how does (could) anyone ever recover from knowing he threw a baby off a bridge? He's never going to come right.

It's a sad, horrible story. :-(

Yes, an offense of this nature makes me sick to my soul. I have been an attorney for about 12 years, and I've heard and seen some pretty awful stuff. As an attorney is supposed to approach each case with a lot of objectivity, but I believe there is room for being attached to a cause and pursuing that cause with a passion. Otherwise, how can I argue in defense of someone, or prosecute him successfully? Having said all that, I say I'm not for "going easy" on people who exhibit such reprehensible behavior. In this case, the parents should be prosecuted for child endangerment, and the cretin who threw the child off the bridge will be charged with some form of murder (I don't know how Hawaii classifies homicides).

I agree with Bluebell who ask, "just a kid? when exactly are people supposed to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions? I have often seen defense lawyers characterize 17 - 21 year-old accused murderers as "young boys" Young boys my ass! By calling them "boys" or "young boys" the defense attorney is playing the sympathy card. The feeling is that "boys" should not be held to the same standard as "men".

Too bad we don't ship such criminals to Siberia or some other place where they will never see civilization again.

bluebell:

you need to reread my comments.......i said to waste the sucker and get rid of people like him.........not just for being at a young age, a drug addict, and another useless person...........only because they should turn the hurt to themselves............not to hurt/harm other innocent people, specially throwing a baby to their death...........
