These are SOME Thais beliefs

1. One who pass away will be taken to hell by Â÷ٵ (Yomma thut: the Death spirit of god ) to be judged for whatever good or bad one had done before in his life.

2. Everyone goes to hell as everyone might do a bad thing at least once in their life

3. After one gets their punishment in hell they will go to heaven to spent their new life there. For how long? It will depend on how many good things one had done in their life.torns will pop up and hurt you , if you fall those dogs will bite you Rat bite

those two for one  who cheated on one's wife/husband   heaven

4. For the first 7 days after one dies , one may not know that they have already left their life and they will come back as a ghost to do everything as usual. Until the 7th day, then they will know that they are not still living human and then they will go back to see the ones they love. This idea come up to make their family not to sad hoping they will see each other again just one more time and 7 days after one passes way thier family will not too sad. In the traditional view of death people are not sad for more than 7 days as they had to move on to do things in their lives.

5. A dog will be born human in their next life. We believe that dogs don’t have a good life (I dont think this is so - I have never seen a dog unhappy with their life and commit suicide). One who dies can be born as a dog if they had a very bad big sin in their life.

6. A person who takes their own life in suicide commits a very bad sin. They are not taken to hell so they have to be here as ghost. They are stuck where they die, hungry and anxiously awaiting for someone else to die in the same place as they did.Then they can go to hell.

This idea is a source of many ghost stories. Ghosts kill someone or make someone die in some way to replace them. But the fact is that old Thais just make this up to protect us from accident or taking our own life.

We hear that in some places there are many car accidents. We have to drive slow, and open a window or beep to pay respect to those who have passed away or they will get angry and take our life. The fact is old Thais again just want to make us drive slowly or do something carefully so we do not die also.A monk can release ghost also but we have to know where the ghost is and know their name or have their stuffs like clothes or accessories.

Someone who don’t have soul mate ,maybe their soul mate is now being ghost still stuck somewhere or just being in hell,not born yet.(ppl in heaven can be born as human if they want,they will born beautiful,smart or rich)

7. if you put or drop your food on the floor. You cannot eat it because ghost (one who cannot go to hell as they gave up their life or die in accident) will eat them if you do, ghost will make you get sick (this one just make us healthy)

8.thais bring food to monks as they believe that someone in their family who has passed away can get it after we say their name. The reason for this belief is so we will never forget ones who have passed away and we still respect them as when they were alive. Also ppl will then go to the temple to hear some good things, find the way to do good things and study what Buddha Lord said.

9. parents who pass away still have some power. If we do something bad one will say “your parent in the heaven will see and cry for this”. and they will have this power for a few years and it make brothers and sisters not to get into conflict or be too mad at each other.

10. Ghosts are everywhere, they protect our houses, the forest, the door, the gate, and our land. I will talk about this more in a future JN article: We have some idea about why some ghost are here. Some are born to be a ghost, look human but have some power and will stay here like an angel to protect us and not go to hell. ghost's house

they say Thais are Buddhists but it seems they believe more in ghosts

yes thais are buddhists but before buddhism was here ... we had been with in some kind of beliefs like ghosts or DHEVA for hundreds years.

and not only buddhism we also accepted Bamahana and indian beliefs they talk alots about DHEVA and ghost

also this part I talk about ghosts only ... ..... maybe next time i should tallk about buddhist

I think some ghost stories and some beliefs about death ,they were made up for some reason as I put on the JN

when we did not have TV, internet or school.Making up some stories is the good way to control ppl make them believe in the same thing and use that thing to control them
