A Hard Days Night in Manila

On July 1966, of course way before I was born. The Beatles may have been "bigger than Jesus," according to John Lennon but they were still expected to show reverence to the then Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos. What was anticipated to be the biggest concert event on the last leg of The Beatles Asian tour; as you can see in the youtube video it became a dark spot in the groups history. The Beatles held two sold out concerts at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium with a combined attendance of 80,000. The evening concert registered a 50,000 paying audience being rivaled only in size by the concert The fab four gave at Shea Stadium in New York on August 15, 1965The group politely declined an invitation to the presidential palace, and once the "snub" made the news, it became a very close situation, they found themselves chased by angry mobs to the airport, beaten by police and forced to pay back their show earnings in order to be allowed to leave without arrest. They were never invited back.

btw. Imelda Marcos is partly back in power again.

No need to be 'bigger than Jesus' to get in trouble :-) Two months ago I got busted in Manila for having a beer in public (50 meters next to US embassy). The according law is new and nobody seems to know about it. It was enacted by the so called "Dirty Harry" the current mayor of Manila. At police station they slapped me till a friend from the De La Salle University convinced the head officer that he's gonna get in trouble for that. After I had to sign that I didn't get tortured I could leave. Actually there was an appointment at the university but I cancelled. I will never ever go there again. The disrespect for human dignity and the way they handle corruption is so unpredictable that I really felt like hugging the first Thai policeman when I came back to Bangkok. And hey, that means a lot!

"When I hold you in my arms and I feel my finger on your trigger I know that nobody can do me no harm ... coz happiness is a warm gun, yeah mama" ... but Khun Marcos is a walrus :-)
