Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has been ranked the 31st most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel retains her ranking as the most powerful. In a profile of Ms Yingluck, the magazine argued that she is the prime minister of “one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies” and “has succeeded at keeping a fragile peace between the country’s colour-coded political enemies”, described as “Democrats (‘yellow shirts’), associated with monarchists, and Pheu Thai Party (‘red shirts’), with a base of farmers and the working class”. The article added that Ms Yingluck is working to settle Southeast Asia’s “most violent internal conflict” in the South of the country, in which more than 5,000 people have died. “In an effort to resolve the deadly fighting in the Muslim, Malay-speaking southern provinces, Shinawatra has turned to Malaysia to help negotiate a peace settlement with the separatists,” it said. In terms of notoritey outside of Thailand, the profile said Ms Yingluck attracted international attention in 2013 when she pledged to outlaw Thailand’s domestic ivory trade after a public campaign led by the World Wildlife Fund ambassador and actor Leonardo DiCaprio . This year’s ranking is a drop of one place for Ms Yingluck, who was ranked 30th in 2012. Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi was ranked 29th this year, 10 notches down from 19th in 2012. The magazine hailed Aung San Suu Kyi for being elected to Myanmar’s parliament less than two years after being released from nearly two decades under house arrest, in an election where her National League for Democracy party took 43 of 45 open seats. “The human rights icon has spent the past year aggressively pushing for constitutional reforms in time for the next presidential elections in 2015,” the magazine said, despite facing criticism of her new relationship with the military, which she has defended by citing the need for “negotiated compromise”. A newcomer to the list, South Korea’s president Park Geun-hye is ranked 11th. She is South Korea’s first female president and was elected with the nation’s highest voter turnout in 15 years. Forbes said Ms Park presides over the world’s 15th largest GDP at US$1.15 trillion, but its once “Gangnam Style”-charged export economy is being challenged by China and Japan, amid international anxiety over brinksmanship on the Korean peninsula. via Forbes magazine ranks Thai PM 31st most powerful woman in the world | Bangkok Post: breakingnews.

Thammasat University academic Somsak Jeamteerasakul’s Facebook account has been suspended for 30 days, leading to widespread criticism on social media. Facebook user Phakjira Slk, claiming to have been asked by Somsak, posted a message on the academic’s page saying the account had been suspended on Wednesday morning because he allegedly criticised Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for suing Thai Rath cartoonist Chai Rachawat. “I want to confirm that I am against Yingluck for filing the lawsuit against Chai Rachawat. This lawsuit is in contradiction to the spirit of democracy,” is the message Somsak posted on his page. He also said that the libel lawsuit was a waste of public money. Many of his supporters spread the message widely on social media, though some said they were glad his access to Facebook had been blocked. In the message via Phakjira Slk, Somsak said his account had been suspended because somebody had reported him as having violated Facebook’s terms and conditions, adding that he was afraid he would be framed again if he were to register for a new page. Police summonses Meanwhile, the cartoonist has not responded to police summonses after Yingluck sued him for libel, deputy director of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Maj-General Anuchai Lekbamrung said yesterday. Anuchai said the Metropolitan Investigation Committee had issued a summonses on Wednesday for Somchai Katanyutanan, or Chai Rachawat, to report on June 5 for further questioning and acknowledging the allegations. The allegations of insulting government official on duty, commercial libel and violation of the Computer Act compel the cartoonist to report to the investigation committee. If he fails to show up on two occasions, the committee will be forced to seek an arrest warrant for him. via Critic’s Facebook page suspended; cartoonist ‘ignores’ summonses – The Nation.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sunday attacked a newly launched website opposing his sister, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Thaksin, speaking on Skype, told red-shirts gathering at Ratchaprasong intersection on Sunday night that the Thai Spring website would never “be sprung” and disturb his supporters. Retired Pol Gen Vasit Dejkunjorn and former senator Kaewsun Atibodhi unveiled Thai Spring on Thursday as a new venue to air opposition to Prime Minister Yingluck and her government. The website was created after the controversial speech by Ms Yingluck in Mongolia on April 29. The self-exiled convicted prime minister defended Ms Yingluck, who said in the speech that the military coup in 2006, which ousted her elder brother, put an end to the progress of democracy in the country. Critics cried foul over the speech, saying the prime minister was telling only a half truth and intentionally hid the fact of alleged corruption and interference in independent agencies by Thaksin as the reasons leading to the decision by the armed forces to unseat him. Tida Tavornseth, chair of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), praised those killed during the April and May clashes three years ago and described them as “heroes who sacrificed their lives in peaceful battles to reclaim the people’s powers and restore true democracy to Thailandâ€. Speaking to a crowd of at least 20,000 UDD supporters, Mrs Tida demanded justice for the people who were killed, injured and incarcerated during and after the 2010 event and urged the state to “expose the truth†to Thai society and the international community. She called on the legislative and administrative branches to push ahead with the amendment of the 2007 Constitution so that the new charter would truly belong to the people. She urged the enactment of reconciliation law to annul convictions and punishments against all political offenders of all colour groups except those who were to be held responsible for the violent crackdown against the red-shirt protesters. They must be legally punished, she said. via Thaksin slams anti-Yingluck website | Bangkok Post: breakingnews.
