hi all ,

new to TF. reading the board i thought it was the good place to finally try to find a teacher .

some basic things about me:

i'm french , been comming in thailand regularly since 13 years but living here only since 20 months.

i would like to find someone with real teaching ability and good pedagogy ( no rote learning) so i can learn to speak ( i do a little already , basic conversation and stuff) but more importantly read and write , because i think one cannot progress in any language without he reading ability in order to pick up new vocabulary.

ideally i would like to get 3 lessons of two hours a week at my home (off sukhumvit 50, BTS on nut )

if you are interested or know someone who fits the profile please contact me

i wish I'll meet some ( or all) of the TF members someday at some event .

very glad i discovered this comunity wich seems to be rocking and frendly from what i read sofar.

cheers

NB: as i just subscribed yesterday and just recovered from a computer crash , i don't have yet any picture on my profile , i hope i can dig up some good ones and post them ASAP

ok , i uploaded a picture , now i will start filling more infos about myself.

to get back on the topic , contact me to discuss the price per lesson, but i want to make sure that the right person is a thai national with a real teaching ability ( no need to be a pro teacher, but just having pedagogic skills)

i guess i'm not too hard of a student , i learn fast if taught correctly

cheers all

I am also about to look for someone to teach me Thai.

I have pretty much got the tonings ok, which I think is the hard part of Thai, as I have been here 3 years. I also have a small command of Thai, but been too busy to learn properly.

I want to start off with a lesson a week for say 2-3 hours, preferably Monday nights.

I do have an excellent thai learning course of 2 cd's called "Thai for Beginners" by Benjawan Poomsan Becker I recommend it.

It might be the way to start with my teacher :) and for anyone wanting a structured course.

I live in Soi Ruam Rudee about 100mtrs from the USA Embassy.

Muah to the girls and whatever to the guys.

Just wanted to wish you luck! In case you don't find someone there are a couple of good courses you can purchase. Such as Rosetta Stone at http://www.rosettastone.com/home and Pimsleur at http://www.simonsays.com.

Interesting your choice of words - pedagogic. I wonder how many people know the definition of that word! I assume you are using it to define someone who can teach. But interestingly enough - it realates to the word Pedagog - originally defined as " the slave who escorted children to school",

Good luck

wow funny , i didn't know the ethymology of the word pedagog, quite interesting to see that it kinda changed sense.

well in france we use it all the time when reffering to good teachers.

webster says:

Main Entry: ped·a·go·gy

Pronunciation: 'pe-d&-"gO-jE also -"gä-, esp British -"gä-gE

Function: noun

: the art, science, or profession of teaching; especially : EDUCATION .

for me its not as trivial , being a pedagog is being able to teach someone while keeping him interested in the subject, not being just babbling and making students repeat formulas endlessly even if they don't understand it.

pedagogy is the way to make the students brains work by themselves and understand the mechanics of the language for that matter. not just throwing a list of words to be learnt by heart but being able to explain why such word is more appropriate than another in some context etc etc...

cheers

i heard that the best place to learn thai is AUA, but my problem is that i'm such a lazy cow that i know that after sometime i will drop the classes. that is why i need a teacher who comes at my place , like this i cannot skip.

héhéhé i just know my limits too much.

Ten years here and I am still learning.... I was kinda lucky that I came here pretty young and learnt alot in my first few years....

I have to say, I tried out various private teachers, Thai nationals, and at various different stages in my life here, I got two years in at Thammasat - part-time, 6 hours a week, that seemed to give me some confidence, I guess because it was at a time when not so many westerners were speaking Thai.

I have met various farang who speak far better than me, and I always respected their skills, knowing how hard the language road is. In the end, I decided to learn Thai from a westerner I respected for his own skills. To tell the truth, at that stage, (I was about 3 years in, reading a little, speaking so so) it was the best thing to do. I learnt more from him than I ever did with a Thai. Due to his work, and my laziness, I stopped, however for the 3 years that I learnt from him, cannot say I could have had better experience anywhere else.

All these places like Baan Passa, and whatever they are called.. not sure they are really gonna help you so much. Sorry, just my opinion. Even at my level now, I would still consider learning from a westerner again if I were to pick up the books again.

As for reading/writing, you can do that yourself easily, really. I used 'Colloquial Thai' by Routledge, but trust me, it's not worth doing until you have a very good grasp of speaking and listening. Again, just my opinion, but I should say, you'll have a skill you feel proud of, but it won't really get you very far or be of much use, unless you have a particular reason for doing it. A buddy of mine at work can read well.. (after just a year of being here) but doesn't know what he is reading, or how to speak it clearly.

Good luck all.
