Vindaloobeast
Hi Tfers, Ive read the thread on laptops and seems Ghee might get a PM soon but Im seeking some advice please. Im visiting Thailand soon and I'd like to buy a laptop for my son as a combined birthday / Xmas present. I was wondering about any pitfalls of buying in Thailand for example mains charger plug configs, operating system language, warranty, keyboard etc. My son will be wanting WI/FI and laptop should have reasonable graphics package and sound (hard to please) and good battery life is essential. He is only a youngster however I kind of believe in buying quality that lasts rather than rubbish..I know PC's date quickly but you get the idea. He isn't currently a gamer and if he develops that need then I'll buy a console so doesn't have to be game friendly although it must have good graphics capability. We will be using it for future hols too. Ive been looking at Acer in Bangkok before..seems well supported globally. Panthip seems a bit hit and miss to me so good advice is reqd. Also what sort of savings can be had as opposed to buying back home..? Thanks in advance. Beast.
Vindaloobeast
Thanks Ghee..good advice..think I'll take a look when Im over there. Doesnt matter about the keyboard really as our home PC uses a joint QWERTY overlaid with Thai keyboard and we are used to it now. I dont want to spend much more than about 20,700bt approx as I cant justify the cost on what it will be used for. Beast.
koyha
A few things to think about, - if you buy a laptop from Thailand and it breaks at home. The warranty? There isnt. - If you buy a laptop from HongKong, they give you a 1 to 3 year warranty, depends on model, price etc... - If I buy a laptop from Finland, the warranty is usually 3 years, have the right SW, Keyboard, phone support, on site-support etc... So is it worth it to buy a laptop from Thailand? In my opinin NO. You are all by yourself after you have paid it. 21000 Bht is about 450 Euro's, cant get much for that price if you're seeking a new laptop. You can get a good second hand laptop with that price. You are talking about games, Okay, you buy a laptop, but the new games need quite a lot of the grapichs capability etc. so you have to buy a good graphics controller (pcmcia slot) and that (good one) is expensive I noticed that you said that the games will be played with the console, but... Know the sentence "the hunger is bigger..." I would say, think, what is the true need, a laptop with that I can sit at the porch, take a couple of beers and chat /write to TF/friends or a computer with great capabilities that I can beat my friend in a game. I don't know...
Vindaloobeast
No Koyha..my son doesn't play games on the pc. If he goes that way then I'll get him an X-box or similar. My son has become very creative and has very good graphics skills for his age and he leaves me way behind in his capabilities. I suppose we want a machine to surf and that can run decent editing/art progz because thats what he is good at. At the same time I dont want a high end machine with facilities that will never be used and as we will use it on holiday I want to keep the cost down in case it gets stolen (even though it will be insured)..! Ive just discovered the Acer/Asus and Sony warranties are global so shouldnt present much of an issue...apart from the fact I cant afford a Sony or an Asus..! Beast. Matthew
I bought a couple of Acer's in Bangkok. Firstly: the keyboard is English with the Thai script also on it, Secondly: you can claim your VAT back at the airport - so look at the TAX free price. Thirdly: they have great support in Bangkok if you have a problem. Unfortunately my second Acer (Aspire) developed a very noisy fan, which Acer claims is not noisy! and also my screen has already developed some bad pixels. I can get it repaired for free, but it'll take a round 1 to 2 weeks and haven't got around to doing it yet. Generally - I would recommend Acer for their price and hardware, but they have this Empowering software - it's a simplified way for people to change their settings in Windows (good for the novice). anenglishman
If ur son is into hi end graphic editing and so on u will need plenty of memory. Hardware prices in Thailand for new products are not much different to anywhere else in the world. In fact, Apple PCs are more expensive here than in the USA! Generally, unless u live in Thailand it's better to buy ur hardware elsewhere. It makes a ton of sense, however, to buy ur software here.....for all the obvious reasons that I shouldn't write about.
