Chatty
Chalerm wants to protect trade ties with China Public Health Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung is scheduled to meet the Chinese ambassador to discuss the imports of melamine-contaminated milk and milkbased products. He said he was afraid the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s report on the contaminated imports would affect Thailand's trade ties with China. He said he would ask people who personally know the Chinese ambassador and the chairman of the Chinese Association in Thailand to first explain the situation to the envoy in an informal setting. "I did not mean that I am afraid of China, but we [the government] have to be concerned about our commercial relationship, because Thailand trades a lot with China," he said. The Nation Unbelievable!!! He is the minister of health but care about the trading with China more than health?

But nowhere near as funny as the Transport Minister saying he "really learned his lesson with the One2Go crash where lots of people died. From that he learned that he really needs to accept safety as the number one focus and put controls in place". You cant blame him if it wasnt in his job description. I mean.... his work is about Transportation silly... not Safety.
sunsnow
I think the point of that article was the affects of negative PR that ripples from milk products easily to other food products. This kind of talks for sure are going bilaterally with between all Asian countries and China currently. I bet there are talks about what Chinese government is gonna do about the food safety issues but also to bilaterally trying to smooth over things so that other Chinese products wouldn't be affected. This is not to mean to neglect the milk scandal but just to make sure that business in other areas at least goes on so that for example there wouldn't be boycott of other Chinese unrelated products etc. And yes, it is important to keep the business running between Thailand and China. Thailand needs China now more than China needs Thailand with the current economic crisis that is affecting Thailands biggest trading partner.
