An aircon story.......

Much though I love Thailand I do get frustrated sometimes. My pet hate is the Thai banking system which I now refuse to discuss in the interests of good health. While a culture based around the polite article and an attitude of Mai pen rai is charming and gentle, mai pen rai translates a little too often to "who gives a f.u.c.k". Most often I see this in the quality of Thai craftsmanship.Recently I have been having an aircon tussle. It started in a small way, with water pouring out of the air unit above my bed. No big deal. We call the building management and they contact their preferred outside contractor. He turns up a few hours later, looks around and disappears. Nothing appears to be happening. We call the building again and they tell me he is busy but can come on Saturday at 11am.....it was now Thursday.Saturday and I sit in the condo until 2pm. No show. I decide to go to lunch and happen to mention to the receptionist that no one turned up. She calls the contractor. He's busy. We agree that he will come Monday at 11am. Amazingly he turns up, along with 5 of his friends. There is no big deal. The air units need to be cleaned, which is quite normal.6 units at 1500 baht per unit. They make a hell of a mess but the air is working again. Not a bad result.Wednesday night there is a flood in the kitchen. Water is pouring out of one of the air units. Hold on I say....there was nothing wrong with that unit. What the hell did they do? Moreover, it seems that the air in the bedroom, which did need fixing, is lacking a key component.........it is not cold.Thursday we get back in touch but they don't pick up the phone. What a surprise. They have been paid. It is obvious there is a problem which will be on their dollar so...mai pen rai.Mai pen rai my ass. We finally get them to turn up on Friday. They take a look and leave to "get some supplies". That's the last we have seen of them. It is now Sunday and I have had no aircon for over a week. It's not the biggest disaster in the world but it's a mildly irritating example of how "mai pen rai" can work against u. Is this a situation unique to Thailand? Almost certainly not but it does seem to be a feature here more than elsewhere in Asia. No place is perfect so I will swallow the frustration.Coincidentally I was told that the aircon for my new development has been costed at 8 million baht. If it works anywhere near as well as the air in the condo I guess I won't be needing to invest in a sprinkler system for fire safety!!!!!If u assume that I am bored on a Sunday morning, a little sweaty from lack of air and generally lacking nything useful to do, you assume right!

I feel for you big fella. I always thought Thai craftsmanship was the best in South East Asia. One Thai builder told me that Thais are like the Germans of South East Asia, which is pretty impressive considering the competition. It would seem they're not as efficient and punctual as you would first think.

Peace out.

3 guys came to fix mine.

it is still dripping water and blowing warm air.

then the guy asked me for a pair of running shoes out on my balcony!! (I gave them to him)

It costs me 5000 baht a month to have the air con on, and it barely works.... lol (I leave it on 24 hrs per day though, even if I go out)
