Way back when, when the world of television was just "Black & White" alone came a band who I think started it all. After this song, we went into an unprecidented musical revolution that lasted some 10 to 15 years. Bands from this erea are still heard live today. Very few bands in the last 20 years have made an impact or are as memorable as those early groups. Why is that? If you look at the 60's and what was going on in the world at that time. You will see many  similarities between then and now. The social and political seeds are there, the talent is there, but nothing is happening,  WHY ?Now here is the Band I think started it all...........some of you may disagree, thats OK, give me your thoughts !!!

THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN!!!

The oldest known existing recording is by versatile Smoky Mountain artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster and was made in 1933. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley.

Interesting subject . . . It's very well documented that the first "Roll & Roll" artists were the Black American artists who spiced up their blues for a better sound. Many Black artists try to credit for being the first. Bo Diddley would get angry if other artists copied his style . . . namely Muddy Waters . . . but there were others playing that way as well. As far political or social commentary in music, I believe that would be Bob Dylan. The British Bands at that time fell in love with Black Americans bluesy rock style and if you check into it, you will see that many of the British Invasion Hits were actually remakes of those songs from the 50's that most of White America had never heard before. Without a doubt . . . Eric Burden &the Animals were early pioneers, but certainly not the ones who started it all.

Fred, Most of what you say is trues. How ever my comment was that a certain climate existed at that time and the players of yhe day picked up the ball and ran with it, and the rest is history.

The social and political conditions are more or less the same now, yet no one had picked up the ball. There is social and political dissatification out there by the truck load. 2 wars soaring fuel costs and I dont see the current generation making social comment or protest in song. There is not cream rising to the top, but there is an abundance of material for them to work with. What is missing ???

It was 1967 . . . they called it the Summer of Love . . . lol . . . the second wave of British Rock hit America. Bands like The Byrds, The Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge . . .The Animals released "Sky Pilot" a song about war!! The Doors(part of the San Francisco invasion) released "The Unknown Soldier" . . . it got banned in the US!! Even now it's difficult find songs like "The Unknown Soldier" and "4 Dead in Ohio" by Crosby, Stills and Nash(which was a 70's song). I think all the political stuff now is in RAP Music . . . and you and I are just not hearing it . . . lol

OUR AGE?? nahh . . . That doesn't explain where all the good songwriters are . . . GAV is right. The conditions are right today for inspired songwriting. It's just not happening . . .

As we all know there is plenty of musical talent in this world, though 99% is not probably even known to us, as some of you have already pointed out.

Music today is about big money (it was in the past too), so it is being controlled by the big fish, promoters, producers and managers and there prefabricated music. They are the one responsible for making most (not all) of modern day music flat and boring.

.

When things were progressing in the music world, the recorded musicians themselves were allowed to experiment freely with there own music, hence there quality and originality in there music.

Music that has stood the test of time, will still be listened to by young and old alike, regardless of when it was recorded.
