wahoo!

i went to see Cremaster 1-2 lastnight and will see the third one tonight and 4-5 on sathurday night.

they are good, visually beautiful, graphic, and interesting.

i guess Matthew Barney is trying to tell as how to look/read/interpret his sculptures by revealing all the inspirations, concept, reflections, social issues, political statement, nations and influences that he has before sculpting his artworks.

whether my guessing is right or wrong, i still feel that his movies offer the audience an understanding to his sculptures rather than walking to the gallery and look at his sculpture with a gray ideas.

similar to when looking at philip glass's movies. philip glass creates music and movies that reveal the meaning of each other, as the music itself, without lyrics at all, is pure and abstract. however both artworks and music are universal language. BUT! language needs to be interpreted.

anyway, just for the sake of life experience, if you have chance, find the cremaster by matthew barney and watch them!

ciao!

cool stuff...

i think the movies exist as free-standing pieces. there is an interdependence between the films and the sculpture, a case could be made that the films are a way into his sculpture, but a case could also possibly be made that the sculptures are a way into the films... of course i may be heavily biased, having switched from art to film...

he had a huge solo show at the guggenheim museum, which had all the films as well as a sculpture retrospective, and shot the last one there i believe...

interesting stuff.
