I am trying to increase my personal network, I have a lot of friends already, but many was somewhat connected to my wife before I went here... So I am also wandering (with my wifes full knowledge) around in different datingsites...

And quite often I see farang guys try to impress the girls by writing (in latin letters) a short note to the girl, on her public page for all to see, and (try to) read...

Here are some of my absolute favorites :

Phu ying na ruk... Well ofcause we should be guessing - he is saying what a cute girl... but karaoke thai dosen't always end up in what we think it is... what if this is what the girl read : ผู้หยิ่งหน้ารุก - it also read "phu ying na ruk" but with a VERY different meaning, it say something like "an arrogant person attacking" - and the girl may be running off... a bit on the... not so happy... side...

The oneliner I always get a smile from :

Khon suay - I KNOW, that in 99% of the cases, the guys really mean no offence, but what if the girl reads : คนซวย - it say "khon suay" - but the meaning is a LOT different from what our normal guy would think (and hope) for, this time it say : damn person... Most girls really don't like to hear that, when You are on a date (another free hint) don't EVER say it, if You don't know the tone... You may loose a great date...

Here is one of the more hillarious :

Phom chorp khun mak mak - the guy is very probably saying : I really do like You a lot, but the girl who is a Vet... reads : ปอมชอบคนมักมาก (Phom chorp khun mak maak)... but... it mean... My Pomeranian like greedy persons...

Here is one I saw today :

Ao khuy gan mai - the guy want to chat, no doubt in my mind, but what if the girl reads : อ้าวคุ้ยก้านไม้ (ao khuy gan mai) she may have a funny look at her face, because it would translate into something like : quickly dig up the wooden leg...

My own personal story is : when I first started to learn thai, it was among other thing at the boards of pantip.com - where I met my later to be wife, she and I started to chat too, I always ended the chats (I was in Europe, she was here) with : ฝันดีนะครับ (fan dee na khrap - sweet dreams)...

The problem in learning thai solely in reading and writing is that You totally miss out the tonemarkers, we do not have tones like thais do, so when I finally got to meet my wife to be (we met as friends only) we went to Khao Sok on a short vacation - she was due to be back at work... We shared the cottage (2 single beds) on the lake, it was pitch dark (they turned off the generators at 22:00 then) and I said ฟันดีนะครับ (fan dee na khrap - right now You will hear a LOT of peoples laughing, who read this)...

She didn't reply... But in the darkness I heard a giggle, then louder and finally she burst into unstoppable laughter... when she came through I asked her, what did You laugh about... Well.. she giggled... You said : "Nice teeth" - and I got braces on even... and then she started laughing for another hour or so...

So... kids... if You do not know how to write it in thai letters, or with tonemarks then better don't do it, there is nothing wrong in saying : damn You are cute, You are beautiful, I really really like You, do You want to chat and even sweet dreams... But if You want to impress, don't use karaoke language, You may end up far worse than You entered...

And also, this is another free tip, check the english language skills with the girls, by slowly introducing words of a bit higher level... My personal experience is that I very often are chatting with MicroSoft Bling translater... And even it is fun, it dosen't make a lot of sence...
