hello space...

a while ago, i was invited by one art history prof. for a coffee. nothing official, really...we just sort of exchanged ideas and chitchatted in general. at some point over the conversation, she proposed me to give a lecture about Thai Arts. that sounded interesting indeed but i had to turn her down because i didn't have time to do research for that matter. there're too much to juggle already.

anyhow, the idea of having a talk about thai arts inspired me to look through the time where i was and teleported my mind back to old days, let say...2-400 yrs back. my head started visualizing the Thai life style of those days. what came out of that was....ppl did not hang paintings on their walls, unlike western-centric style. why so?

(would you like to think about the answer before reading mine?)

in my opinion, at the old days a lot of people lived in farmlands where brutal winter took almost half a year. with that kind of weather, to keep them warm and to prevent losing the heat, they had to construct their house to be closing space, not much of windows or not at all. fresh vegetables and fruits supplies were not accessible. so, to keep themselve apart from being depressed as they were trapped inside the dull walls, they hanged painting. that's to give them senses of windows. that's to remind them that spring and summer were coming. and that's to promise them that there would be fruits and veggetables on their tables again soon.

there are more reasons in doing so, but i rather skip at this point.

leave you some room to think further, if you please.

in thailand, the weather was so kind. the warm climate shaped our old-days living style to its best suit. our houses had big open windows where we could just look outside and appreciated natures. if the windows were paintings, our paintings had minds of their own. they moved, they grew, and they changed themselves overtime. we did not have to hope for food supplies since we had fishes to catch and we had fruits and veggies to cultivate. not to mention that the sun has been punctual for his working hours, unlikely the west where day-light keeps changing it's length of appearance.

it's all good...east and west...they are not better than the other, we just have to pay a little bit of a trade-off. i didn't mean to compare...it's just another perspective...there're still a zillion more.

ciao!
