since the semester has ended...i am now free like a flying pixie in neverland...

besides spending time with tlc, i start watching TV, esp news, to catch up with the rest of the world...

since right now im not subscribing with any cables, so i have only 2 crappy channels to browse to. (i'll subscribe to the cable again next week...yeah!)

so i have to watch 'american idol' gosh!!!...i've never thought i'd live long enuff to have this day that i have nth better to do!

it's boring, the costume needs massive improvment..who is the stylist?????

well..im not saying that i usually dress up nicely...for me, just t-shirt and jeans...but that doesnt mean that i dunno the meaning of 'good taste'.

is it authentic? singing somebody else's songs...in the exact style...NO!..i wish they could sing the same somg but in their own style.

well well well...this show is not as bad as 'survivors', gosh..i cant stand 'survivors'. i watched it once...only the last 5 mins and that's it!...it's a very mean, stupid, outrages, manipulative, hurtful show ever made!

the two show say a lot about middle class dreams, materialism, human greeds and the like...

and what about other reality TVs...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

i cant believe ppl love consuming others' life stories this much...enuff to keep this kind of show popping up like popcorn.

and money...is everything!!!...enuff for those ppl to come out to humiliate themselve...

i believe that it's not purly reality, lots of drama in there...and somewhat the producer and audience try to shape it to the melodrama genre for sure...just to answer the catharsis...plain simple...to reach the sublime for the sake of watching!

what is real is the reflection that you actually need to think beyond the screen...and try to understand why we have these shows, what make ppl do this, how this kinda show sooth our societies, is it teh representation or symbol of our era?...and so forth...

think about it, i have my own answer...but now im too lazy to type.

Now why do we need reality TV? I got a theory as well that I like to call the "Simpsons Syndrome". It all started 10 off years ago when america's most loved and dysfunctional family burst onto our scenes. We all loved it so much because well they were just like us: middle class and facing the same assortment of problems we faced, only they made a joke out of it which made it bareable to watch...it beat watching paint dry anyway. So with that success we got wonderful shows like survivor, joe millionaire, big brother etc...we all want to know what the bloke (or sheila) next door is doing! It's damn fascinating when its someone else being satired out there - just as long as its not us. Now back to the point though. Why do we love reality TV shows? Maybe because they remind us of our own mundane lives, maybe they remind us that everyone no matter how big or small has secrets (just like we do!) or maybe its just because we're glad that eventhough we have screwed up lives that there's someone else out there who's even more screwed up than we are.

Reality TV? Its not reality, its an escape from the reality that we're stuck with and are desperately hoping to run from. What's scary is that if future we'll actually have a big brother system of behaviour control and we'll be dumb enough to actually accept it caus well, isn't everybody else watching?

TV has been the light that projects the audience's dream for so long...

it conveys fragments of infomation where viewer does not require full attention or any form of reality in order to retrieve information, unlikely telephone or otrher real-time corespodance medium.

it started off as a box of dreams where it shows whatever viewer wanna be.

but since it's so fragmented, now watching TV is to switching through 300s channels in 10 mins..and access to all info. that's really a shift of viewer's behavior...both internet and tv, we have about 2-3 second to capture viewer's attention...if we fail..then they move on to other channels. the invention of remote controls take big part for this diversity.

now, why do we (not me) like reality TV?

i think it's becoz humans are chain with reality. same as telephone is the most effective meduim for capturing human's participation. so...when we kinow that what we are watching is real (but fake), we tend to get sucked in easier than other drama forms where we are positioned as a viewer. reality TV offers us the senses of true feeling of the characters/participants on screen....and for the show that the viewers can vote...(which in fact another way of making a big sum for the telephone company), it shifts the role of passive viewers to active viewers.

time for cigs, enuff for now

; )

Yeah !! They are not real show.. i do believe and agree with you guys.. but why they do this kind of shows ?? I personally think, b'coz ppl want to know more about the others' stories.. they are curious.. i am too -- hehehe + , + they can make money from these curiosity.. why not.. ?? It is a buzz -- they do whatever can make them lots of money ... right?

But for me, survivor is still ok.. but Ricky lake is the worst !!

Anyone has seen this show .. Oh dear.. so sick !

rikki lake is pretty tame compared to the Jerry Springer Show.

okay, i wasn't going to ask this question...partly because i don't care and partly because i'm afraid of the answer...but here it is anyway... there is so much that is considered "reality" television and that seems to be the current buzz word, but how do you define that which is consider "reality" tv and that which isn't?

Link to comment

we dont define that, but those producers and creatives specify it for us...

and that doesnt ultimately true...

when it comes to our own definition...no one cares...and nothing is matter.

i guess..

if i watch tv, any tv program, and it evokes a response (happy, sad, bored, mildly entertained, etc.), then those feelings are "real". Thus, isn't all television "reality" tv...perhaps not the characters and stories exist, but the feelings they create do indeed exist within my reality.

i agree with you, Brother Butter...

i dont really mind dealing with that in real life coz i have oppotunities to avoid, escape, fight back or whatsoever...but i hate seeing that on TV...i just cant, it's so...hurtful?

i dunno...i cant take that.
