English_Bob
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8538013.stm Thailand's Supreme Court has ruled that $1.4bn (£910m) of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra's family fortune should be confiscated by the state. The court agreed with prosecutors that the assets were gained illegally through conflict of interest when Mr Thaksin was prime minister. The funds were frozen after Mr Thaksin's elected government was overthrown in a military coup in 2006. Mr Thaksin, who is living abroad, has denied any wrongdoing. The amount seized by the court is more than half of the $2.3bn that prosecutors had demanded. It was not yet clear if the outstanding $900m will be returned to Mr Thaksin. The court took several hours to deliver its verdict, with security forces on high alert amid government predictions of violence by Mr Thaksin's red-shirted supporters if the court decision went against him. That doesn't seem like the full amount... so he gets to keep some... I'm guessing in return for fading away. Perhaps the remaining $900m should be put in a box in Paragon with a sign saying "Thaksin - if you want it... come and get it."
English_Bob
Funny... I just received this... Dear Sir Please allow me to introduce myself... My name is Paetongtarn Shinawatra. I thank Buddha that he has brought us together like this. My father was once the Prime Minister of Thailand before he was overthrown in a bloodless coup. Before he left he was able to deposit 900 million baht in an account. I need the assistance of someone as smart and financially solvent as yourself to help to retrieve that money.... for a small finder's fee. I can't wait until we are reunited and we can spend all day in bed together... (me and the money, of course... not you.) Ha... it's obviously a scam! What a ridiculous story! English_Bob
So... the verdict is guilty. The money is forfeited. And what are the punishments for abuse of power and corruption? I mean, the guy broke the law. So he can't keep the money. But isn't there now a reasonable reason to charge and try him in a criminal court? Otherwise it's like freeing a guilty bank robber and the only punishment is that he can't keep the money.
