Ianin
I have noticed there are a few divers in TF (and I don't mean muff divers) and would like your advice or suggestions. I will have my two teenage kids (17 & 14) staying with me for three weeks over Christmas and want to teach them to dive. Its my intention to stay on a beach for a week or two so they can go sailing, water skiing, etc. as well as learn to scuba dive. My dilemma is where can I take them that has good diving for beginners, has professional dive schools so they can become Padi accredited and the location is suitable for a couple of teenagers (boy and girl). One other important point - it must have access to somewhere where I can get a decent meal and a good bottle of plonk. My current thoughts are on Koh Samet as its convenient, not too commercialised and there are a few decent resorts but I have no idea what the diving is like or if the dive schools are professional. I shall not be going to the Andaman Sea as last time I knew someone learning to dive on Phi Phi, there was an accident and one of our secretaries on holiday from Taiwan drowned. The whole episode was a nightmare and it took two weeks before I could get her body back to her family. Since then I just don?t feel comfortable around Phuket. Thanks for any ideas. expatdiver
I wouldn't give up on Phuket. You could try Kata Beach which is more family oriented. The diving around Phuket is very easy and safe. Don't let one bad experience spoil a great destination for you. Wherever you go, make sure you use a credible dive school. Talk to the instructor that will be teaching your kids, and make sure you are comfortable with them. That is probably the most important thing. CuTieGirL
I've seen an Italian family with 2 boys....and everyone in the family dive.... I'd suggest....Koh Samui....not too deep and nice environment....diving is all about experience if you don't have good experience from the start you probably don't wanna continue it.... Try to take them somewhere that they have choices....I mean....they can do other things while not diving....I can't think of anywhere better than Koh Samui.....plus it's cheaper than in BKK anyway....and you can also do ur diving while ur kids are getting the lessons....
