Best place to be for Songkran?

Chiang Mai is the undisputed capital of songkran which usually last about 3-4 days. Good luck in finding a room though.

I lock myself away for the duration, but I hear songkran in Bangkok is concentrated in KSR and anywhere else you find gaggles of farang. Blessedly it only seems to last for about 2 days here.

If you are not yet fed up with diluted sewage being thown at you, then head to Pattaya where the soaking continues for a whole week.

Haven't been to too many places for the festival.

Last year, becoz of work I got to celebrate it for 9 days in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phrapradaeng.

I was at KSR last year with some friends. I guess we were lucky that we had our post at this one place where we weren't being pushed in hectic crowds and we had plenty of water. We started off with 4 and then joined 5 more korean, 4-5 more Thais and one more German as our own army and attacked whoever got in our way. I was there 3 days in a row. Can't say that KSR was that bad but it can be bad if u just stayed in that alley that was fully packed all the time.

Pattaya was also ok.. but I visited only Na Klua area so not that many farang and it was quite fun. Phrapradaeng was also quite fun with no farang at all.

Personally, I'd like to try Chiang Mai and Phuket for the festival. ^_^

NOTE: To protect ur mobile phone from water use condom, not the used one though.

If u r a farang who r average looking an above beware of the gays and the girls, I saw some being harrassed last year.

Still I'm sure u'll have a blast no matter where u choose!

I concur with some of the posts above.

Call me a party pooper if you will, but for sane or self-respecting people anywhere but Thailand is the best place to go for Songkran.

There is more and more written on this subject every year.

People go nuts.

I look at it as the poor people's way to vent... To let off steam for their permanent sorry state of life. And the richer the victim, the happier they are. (And all farangs are considered rich)

The poor masses are granted a few days a year by the government under the guise of a new year's celebration to piss into water guns and squirt at whatever people dare go on the streets to feel vindicated for their pitiful existence.

There is also ass grabbing of women and girls, egg splatting on heads, and medicated powder thrown into the eyes of unsuspecting victims.

Throw a bunch of drunken assholes from around the globe into the mix and it doesn't take a genius to see how such a lovely concept of sprinkling water has turned into a disgraceful display of the worst on offer of this otherwise idyllic destination for holidays and living.

Get out of here for that week (two weeks in Pattaya) and leave the crazies to themselves.

Rant over.

Thanks for all the insights and opinion on Songkran.

Think I got the gist of it...

KSR bad ... check

Pattaya bad ... check

protect phone with condom (unused) ... check

Last year I was in Phitsanulok, which is a mid-sized city in the north, for part of it and actually had a lot of fun. I wouldn't say it was mean-spirited.

Maybe Khao Yai is the best idea though.

Anyway thanks again.

Chris

City moves Songkran festivities

Published: 1/04/2010 at 12:00 AM

Newspaper section: News

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is shifting its Songkran water festival activities from Sanam Luang to the area in front of City Hall and Silom Road to avoid red shirt protesters.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Thaya Teepasuwan said yesterday the festival - which runs from April 12 to 15 - would include the procession of the Phra Buddha Sihing image from the Phutthaisawan throne hall for the general public to worship and bathe as well as entertainment programmes.

The Buddha image and entertainment programmes during the Thai New Year are usually held at Sanam Luang. But, this year, the Phra Buddha Sihing image will be relocated to the front of City Hall. The offering of alms for Buddhist monks, which is part of the tradition, will also be moved to City Hall.

Entertainment programmes will be staged on Silom Road which, Mrs Thaya said, is safe and convenient.

The water festival usually takes place on Silom Road. This year the BMA will make it a walking street for the two days of April 13 and 14.

Inbound lanes of the road will be the venue for Songkran celebrations including traditional muay Thai in which folds of ropes are used instead of boxing gloves, a Songkran beauty contest, a traditional New Year greeting ceremony for the elderly and Thai classical music performances.

Outbound lanes from Dusit Thani Hotel to the intersection with Narathiwat Ratchanakharin Road will be the scene of water splashing and concerts.

The water festival on Silom Road will be secured by 100 city police, 50 ordinary police and 50 soldiers. Mrs Thaya expects the event to draw at least 150,000 visitors.

The BMA would monitor the situation closely. If political violence erupts similar to last April, the BMA would reconsider the celebrations this year, she said
