NigelBragg
I heard that from September 1, all Thai numbers will have an 8 added between the zero and the next digit e.g. +6646.. will become +66846... (hey I will not give away my friend's number)? Is it true for all Thai cellphone users? If so, what do you think prompted this change?

londonmarty.
It happens all over the world 1995 it happened in the UK when they added 7 to th enumber. It's not amoney making scam, it's a necessity. I take it you would rather have Thailand stay in the dark ages and still use carrier pigeons to communicate. BKK4000
As far as I'm aware this only applies to cell-phone users and is in preparation of the auction of 3G licenses, which was planned for Q4 2006 but will more likely now happen in Q2 2007, given all the mess (politically) that has taken place in 2006

The main reason that they add one more digit on mobile phone is to increase another 30 Mil. Mobile numbers for serving mobile user in next 30 years ..Will start use 10 digits from September onward ..but you still able to contact mobile user both 9 and 10 digits until the end of November this year ! Some Mobile Service Provider already launched for 10 digits for the internal trial !! and it's working well so far That's true it is due to the seemingly exponential increase in mobile phone users across the globe. The man with the first mobile phone had the number '1', then they had to add more numbers when more people bought phones. He's not going to be too happy that I've given out his number, but it was for a good cause.

I would rather see Thailand as the leading light in South East Asia actually
