To the original question; My only experience (albeit limited) with Gypsies has been bad........whenever they were in town they would pitch up illegally and there would be a spate of crime in the area.

So, being honest, I suppose I have a negative perception of them. I didnt realise Gypsies classed themselves as a race- I thought it was more a demographic of society.

Race IS a demographic. In the sense that it's a population characterisic. Race describes groups of people by Characteristics.

Some evolutionary scientists reject the view of race as a biologically meaningless concept and reject the notion that any definition of race pertaining to humans can have any taxonomic validity.

This theory has been used by some racists to deny or discredit the concept of racism. It crops up in certain right-wing political party's manifesto's.

The true British Rom is very different from his French or Spanish equivalent, the Hungarian is almost medieval you can still see them with their low canvas covered carts, in the Balkans they are rather similar.

I think the most basic characteristic about them is they are survivors, as Hitler and Stalin discovered. They are not so much criminals as anarchists, many farangs find Thai laws tedious and stupid, gypsies often feel the same about the laws of the country they are in. Yet they respect their own laws and cultures.

When I was a teacher I mentioned once to an old ,60+, gypsy friend that I often had behavioural problems with a group of gypsy pupils. He visited me in class one day, spoke to them for about 10 minutes, I never had any problems after that. I have often wondered what he said.

Romanies have migrated across two continents. The diversity of the language say's it all. It stands to reason that the people will be differ from region to region.

By the way. I don't think Hitler or Stalin found the Romanies to be survivors. On the contrary. Romanies were almost completely wiped out of Eastern Europe. Most were shot or starved to death, some ended up in death camps and many were used as human guinea pigs for scientific experiments. The ones who were married to Germans were sterilised.

It's not really known exactly how many were killed by the Nazi's. This is because the nature of the Romany way of life meant that they were largely uneducated and no record was made. Also, being nomadic, they may have been excluded from population census. But estimates are often around the 500,000 mark. Making them the largest group of holocaust victims after Jews.

Very few people use this word when referring to Gypsy's. In my experience noone uses it, except when no Gypsy's are present, or when in the safety off one's own home and being a racist from an arm chair.

This is a pretty lame way of attemping to justify your racism Hullboy. Like all alternative names for different races, the word Pikey may well become accepted as being racist just like the 'n' word and all the others. Most people already consider it to be. Your thinking is just way behind the rest of us.

No, my insult was meant to be specific. I meant you. Yes it was insulting, but it wasn't racist it was classist. But I wasn't insulting the British middle class. Why would I do that? Gypsy's have been making money from them for generations. Some have even become rich from them. The Romany word gorgio refers to them. It means gentile. Doesn't apply to you though. You're the same as me - working class. You really don't seem to know anything.
