xbox 360 repair & mod

Recommended Posts

I received my xbox 360 in the mail today from overseas. I think it's destroyed internally. :( I can hear Lots of little 'things' moving around inside

I would take it apart myself, and see what's broken, but I lack the right tools to do it. I could order the tool, but I need to mod it anyway, so...

Can anybody recommend a shop that does good work on the 360? I'll need them to check it out completely, then install a mod chip.

I'll also need a converter for the power supply (UPS ower supply?)

If the shop has mod chips in stock, that would be great too, but not required.

I only know of Pantip and Fortune IT center, but if some of you have experience with a shop, I would rather go to one that's recommended.

As for the converter I bought the most expensive one I could find I think it was around 2,000 and after playing for about 10 mins the thing gets so hot I think its about to melt. Good luck finding one where you will be able to play more than about 20 mins at a time.

Check out the shop at Pantip in the far left hand corner. They mod Xbox 360s. I'm sure they could take a look at it... If it's making all sorts of noises when being moved around, I'm virtually guaranteeting you can junk it. Not sure why you'd order one from overseas... Kind of silly really... Considering the 360 is just a specialized PC, would be easy to take a look inside... Do you need a specialized tool to get inside the case? I've never really looked at how to take mine apart. Although I considered removing the case to provide optimal cooling.

For the current converter, should be easy enough to find that. Just look at any place like Pantip or Seri Center. Anything that takes it from 220V down to 110V. Not really sure where you ordered the 360 from though...

JackyB: Where do you think the extra electricity goes? Current converters are just resistors that convert the excess current to heat. Step-ups are different. Optimal cooling is a key for ALL electrical devices.

The problem with the 360 isn't the watts consumed... It's the TOTALLY inadequate cooling solution... A single small fan on the back to draw hot air out of the 360. I strapped an Intercooler on the back which has 3 additional fans. Even with THAT the box got WAY too hot. I added a large floor fan blowing on it from the front AND turn the aircon on while playing. With all of these things, the temperature is acceptable. Without them, I'm sure I'd be looking at the Red Ring of Death...

Shouldn't X-Box do a recall then on the 360 because of overheating and shuting off?

My 360 sucks! I bought it on the 6th floor of MBK about 6 months ago and it sucks.... I mean it doesn't work right...

I'm stuck with it until I get back to Thailand next, then I'm gonna shove it up thier arses.... I think they f**ked it up when they put the mod chip in...

half the copied games never worked and now the few that do work shut off after a few minutes of play....

What the ****?

Yep. Microsoft has admitted half-assedly that there are some problems with the 360 as far as overheating... Since I own one I know for a FACT that there's a problem with overheating... How does your 360 not work properly? It's an easy matter to provide additional cooling. It's entirely that the totally untalented thai hacks at MBK f**ked up your modchip. Take it back and don't give up until you get a new one. "Coasters" are a major problem with pirated games. I've been told the best place to buy pirated games are on the Myanmar border. They let you throw the copies into a 360 and try them out yourself before buying. Unfortunately Bangkok has a severe shortage of REAL games. If you want REAL games, I'd suggest Singapore.

YEP,

I'm really pissed! This X-Box toy was not cheap!

Ok, since I have the Mod Chip.... Does that mean I can play all region (original games) on it too? Asian and North American games too?

It could be awhile before I get back to Thailand! I want this thing working correctly soon...

I'm not really sure about modchips for the 360 as far as their capabilities. I know my modchip allows me to play pirated games as well as asian regional DVDs. It doesn't let me play North American DVDs so I'm assuming that if 360 games are regional, North American ones won't work on it. You'd have to look up the specs on the modchip before you have it installed... My 360 wasn't cheap either. That's why I'm doing whatever I can as far as keeping its temperature down.

:D don,t bother with 360. get a Wii it is amazing good fun a you keep fit. pissess all over 360

Have a read about on the gaming sites... Most are predicting a rather quick BURST to the Wii bubble... Fact is, there are only a handful of reasonable games for the Wii... The best of which is the one shipping with the system. The PS3 has both the "weak catalogue of games" problem as well as an astronomical price. The 360 is clearly the way to go. The "games catalogue" is MUCH bigger than the Wii and PS3 ones COMBINED. No competition when it comes to quality games. Software MAKES the hardware dude...

Wow, thanks for all the responses!

Now, on to my adventure...

I arrive at Pantip early in the morning, around 10 am. The guy in the back (Ronnie's Games) doesn't seem to interested in earning money today. Maybe he's overloaded with PS2 work. So I decide to search the rest of Pantip.

After combing approximately six floors of Pantip, I realize there are no other places that work on consoles. A few of the sellers of copied games say that I have to leave it for three days, and most of them want to put some program on the hard drive to play the copies.

However, one of the game retailers suggests MBK, so off me and my translator...er...girlfriend go.

We arrive at MBK and scour the structure. Many retailers of games cannot do the work, then I find one who says he can. So I hand over my console and proceed to watch him attempt to dismantle it.

Yes, I said attempt. The Thai man quickly discovered the lack of screws, then tells my girlfriend he can't put a mod chip in. I'm so gald I didn't leave it with him for a few days!

My girlfriend and I resume our recon for a skilled tech, and we find a game retailer on the 6th floor who says he knows someone who can do the work. We eagerly wait and in a short while another Thai man arrives. He assures me in semi-comprehendable English that he has done this many times (installed mod chips). He describes the chip he will put in as one that takes a double-tap on the power switch. Internet research allowed me to guess he might be installing a Globe 360 chip - acceptable.

I leave it in his care overnight and wait until the next day to return.

We return the next afternoon and take delivery of the box. He said there was a small part that fell off on the inside, and that it wasn't a problem. He said the 360 works fine, and the mod chip is installed. He also said he cleaned it and modified something to do with the power supply so it can run in Thailand (what?). He also said I needed a transformer.

I easily part with 3,200 baht knowing my 360 is working and a major repair is not needed.

I return home with another 1500 baht in copies (backups, of course), and hook it all up.

YES! My 360 fires up! I plop in a Pantip game and...

Burnout doesn't work. I get an error: "This disc's region code is incorrect" (something like that).

I plop another one in - and it works...very strange. Why would one work, and not anohter?

So I have to go through and figure out which ones are coasters.

Then comes the red ring of doom (No, not the game). Seems there's a strange odor in the room. A burning smell - no, a melting of plastic smell! I quickly put the sniffer to work and locate the source. Whew, not the 360!

Ah, it's coming from the transformer. Wow, that's hot!

After letting the transformer cool a bit, I test each disc. Seems to be a 50% ratio of discs that produce a 'region error.'

So, after reading the posts, I've come to the following conclusions:

My tansformer is crap, and probably is not suppling enough power to continue playing over any length of time. (wouldn't have known it if it wasn't for JackyB's post). Where can I get a good one?

Handing over electronics to Thais for extended work is scary (Yes, Mr. Matlock, a special tool is needed to open the case).

I hope the 'region' problem can be resolved (in a positive way). Coasters suck, especially at 250 baht a pop. I can take them back to trade at MBK, but maybe I should consider a Myanmar trip? Perhaps on my next visa run. Do they have new releases there? (Thanks again Mr. Matlock)

Lots of good info in the posts. Many thanks!

You can also try this place which is close to the Victory Monument BTS... It's in a small mall with a cinema.

Yep. Voltage converters DO get hot... As I said, you're burning off a lot of electricity as heat. I imagine some of the larger converters might be better... Not good to have a resistor like that in such an enclosed area. Also look for a converter that's encased in metal rather than plastic since metal is a better thermal conductor than plastic. I've seen bigger converters at Seri Center as well as at The Mall.

I bought my transformer at central chidlom and it was expensive and it is large and metal and although it says it can accomodate the watts that the xbox puts out it still gets red hot after about 20 mins. Thats why I never play my xbox. I'm not even sure you can find a transformer that will work with it. Maybe will have to pay in 4,000 baht range? I used to use one that cost around 500 baht for my PS2 and never had any problems but it blew up after 5 mins with my xbox. Good luck

Well, that makes a bit of sense since the 360 draws well over 3 times the power of the PS2. Why not just head out onto Ebay or Amazon and pick yourself up an ORIGINAL 220V 360 power brick? Might make sense to spend about 70 dollars US on something that will work rather than the same money or more for a "step down transformer" which may NOT work and get hot enough to burn your residence down.

I bought my 360 modchipped from Pantip. I have absolutely NO problems going online with it. I have no problems with pirated games OR game/system updates. I'll say it again, as a slightly more "hardcore gamer", I'd avoid the Wii unless you have a grandmother or young child who you're trying to get into gaming. The novelty of waving your arms around will wear off as soon as you discover the lack of good games. I've got two times more good/great games for the 360 sitting in my living room than there are in the entire Wii catalogue. 14000 baht for the Wii... 14000 baht for the 360... It's a no-brainer if your main goal is to play games. Mark my words. The Wii bubble WILL burst.

I was told that the power brick has a chip inside, and it was needed to power the xbox. I wonder if an xbox from a different region is compatable?

I talked to the guy who modded my system today, and told him about the 'region' problem with the modded games. He says to bring my 360 back to him and he'll change 'something.'

Great, all the way back to MBK. And then another trip to pick it up. :(

Oh well, I can't play until I get a transformer anyway...

As far as I can figure, a 360 regardless of region runs on the exact same electrical current... The power brick is the only difference... One sold in Asia would be able to deal with 220V AC and output a DC current the same as a PC. A North American power brick would bring in 110V and output the exact same DC current. The only difference is the power brick. I don't see how it would be a problem to interchange bricks from different regions as long as you matched up the input current with the suitable brick. Region only affects the media being inputted. Encrypted mathematical algorithm. Nothing to do with power.

I've loads of problems with pirated games... If proper games were available, I'd be buying those. Nothing worse than a "motorcycle freak" getting MotoGP 06 home and finding out that it's a ******* "coaster". *laugh*

You guys are freaking me out!

Coasters are f**ked up non working games right? If it doesn't work (like half of the copy games I bought in MBK) they ofcourse will take them back right! Or I will need to bust some caps in those Thai dudes heads....

I'm pist, I want to play my 360 dammit.....

When does Halo 3 come out anyway?

Yes. Coasters are discs that don't work. Halo 3 will be out in a matter of a few months. I wasn't all that impressed with Halo or Halo 2 to be honest... The FPS to watch will be Crysis for the PC. It will make Halo 3 look like the ugly, bastard, stepchild. I LOVED their first game "Far Cry" for PC.

I saw this power supply (called the X-360 power supply) on ebay (as previously suggested):

http://cgi.ebay.com/Xbox-360-Replacement-AC-Power-Adapter-Power-Supply_W0QQitemZ170116969548QQihZ007QQcategoryZ122517QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I will look around for one here locally, though. I called gcorners, but they said they didn't have any in stock.

I start an intensive Thai class Thursday, so I'm not dying without my 360, but it sure would be nice to have soon!

Current favs:

Gears of War (still)

Crackdown (what a cool game)

I'm looking forward to:

Tenchu Z

Mass Effect

Ace Combat 6

Halo 1 was cool, I played through to the end. But Halo 2 was more like Halo 1.5. Some neat additions, but I was hoping for something...more.

I saw the Crysis demo, it was really wild. Kinda like Crackdown with the super-human abilities. If you haven't played Crackdown - it's a must-have game!

I also enjoyed Far Cry - I played it on the original Xbox. It had a good feel for an FPS, and the vehicles were implemented well. The way the animal skills were slowly introduced was waycool.

I'm almost finished Crackdown... Cool game... I just wish they would have made the inhabitants of the cities more interesting... The city feels dead. Far Cry for PC was FAR superior to the Xbox version. The AI was merciless. I still don't like Halo. Again, I'm for more psyched for Crysis.
