Strategies to Develop Bangkok as a Sustainable Livable City (06/06/2008)

Bangkok, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, will be developed as a sustainable livable city. The development process will last 12 years, starting from 2008.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin has come up with a Bangkok development plan, 2008 to 2020, which integrates the operations of nearby provinces, so that all development work will be carried out in the same direction. Chulalongkorn University was entrusted with studying the plan.

The Bangkok 2020: Sustainable Metropolis Plan includes three dimensions: gateway, green, and good life, covering infrastructure, social and economic aspects, and management. It involves three levels, regional, urban, and community.

In the first dimension, the city will be turned into a regional center for infrastructure development, focusing on education, culture, health services, transportation, communication, tourism, finance, and management. The second dimension calls for the development of Bangkok as a green city, with the people?s lifestyle being environmentally friendly. In this regard, the ?Sufficiency Economy? philosophy will be promoted together with good governance. In the third dimension, Bangkok will be developed into a knowledge-based society. It will also become a beautiful, convenient, and safe city. Local residents will play a greater role in urban development and will be provided with greater social and economic opportunities.

In order to achieve the three dimensions, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has set five strategies to be implemented in the next 12 years. The first strategy, Connecting Regional Network, seeks to link Bangkok with nearby provinces in terms of economic planning, land use, transport, and environmental management. The five nearby provinces include Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, and Ayutthaya.

In the second strategy, Strengthening Knowledge-based Society, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will establish a unit responsible for economic development. The unit will hold trade seminars, support Thai trade exhibitions abroad, and provide consultancy services for small and medium-sized enterprise operators. A university will be set up to offer courses in urban management in order to produce personnel for production and service industries in the city and its vicinity.

The third strategy, Charming Bangkok, seeks to promote Bangkok as a livable city with a cultural identity and more green areas. A campaign will be launched for a better quality of life of local people. The fourth strategy, Good Life Bangkok, calls for the development of Bangkok as a green society, with green living, green generation, green community and green economy.

In the fifth strategy, Mastering Best Services and Administration, the electronic service system will be developed, so that people will receive better and diverse services. A metropolitan development institute, to be officially opened on 4 June 2008, will serve as a research and development center for efficient city management.

As a first means they ought to promote public mass transport system and strengthen their efforts on the new BTS still to be planned and built.Connecting regional network mass transport would a good way, but still more measures need to be taken to allow a breath of fresh air in Khrung Thep. Fine dust emission needs to be reduced. An appropriate way would be limit the numbers of cars into the city district and force the people into mass transport systems. In addition there ought to be certain zones off limits for cars. But the first and probably most difficult thing is, how to manage to change the attitude of many Thai people. To prevent BKK from intoxication, the fuel and gas price is still way too low.

Do you think 100 Baht per litre would force Thai people into mass transport ?

Dont get me wrong, I am not a heretic. I know that mass transport cant fill the gap at the moment - it is rather a hypothetical question of things to come in near future.

Gold rush mood for BKK students of urban management:D
