Elephants don't live on rice. Or just banana trees. They need hundreds of pounds of vegetation each day.

If people followed HM's advice there would still be enough forests for the elephants.

Who didn't follow that advice? The wealthy of Bangkok.

It's not true that there is NOTHING you can do.

You can give me money or volunteer your time with any one of several groups, from the Friends of the Asian Elephant to the World Wildlife Fund or WildAid.

Fixing the problem is hard. Blaming the poor is easy.

I don't give any baht to anyone beside that i still dont' have enough baht for myself. I have plan to be step mother of the baby elephant long time already but I have to be able to do it before i make it.

I thought elephant on the street eat bananas!!!!!!!! or cucumbers??? which very expensive then in villa market!!!

Otherwise i will end up working as prostitute becuase i am so poor. no money for my daily life ................

You really are talking a lot of BS now, Kungnoi.

Nobody is poor? The elephants are eating bananas from Villa Market?

Are you on drugs or something?

Sorry about BS. I mean bananas or sugar cane or cucumbers that those people sell to us for give to elephant are more expensive than when you buy it from Villa market.

Are you on drugs or something?----------kind of...today..

"If they arrest me, they'll have to take my elephant. What are the police gonna do with an elephant?"

exactly.

it reminds me....

i was in a car accident in Chiang Mai a few years ago. A visibly drunk young man rode his motorcycle into the passenger side door, denting it significantly and rendering his ride unrideable.

police came quickly and we all stood there looking at the uninjured guy sitting on the sidewalk, smiling. the police discussed this situation with all of us and the drunk guy could barely say his name and address but was able to admit he was totally drunk.

The cops looked at me and asked me what I was doing there still waiting for money from this guy or for justice from this situation. He said, "How are you gonna get money from a drunk?"

After a minute, I realized he was right.

I'm not going to make a judgement about who is right or who is wrong, but my wife paints a very different picture than what you've been reading here. Elephants are loved by the Thai people. The elephants are trained almost from birth and are very intelligent. My wife claims elephants are not tortured but actually learn very quickly. They copy the older elephants and are taught by their owners to do different tricks through repetition. I'm sure that somewhere elephants get tortured in some way by some unscrupulus owner . . . but my wife insists that this is not the norm. While I agree, it isn't healthy to bring elephants into the large cities . . . the owners are trying to make money. . . . just like everyone else. The elephants I saw yesterday at the Crocodile Farm did not appear to be abused in any way. In fact, it appeared they totally enjoyed what they were doing and couldn't wait to show off their abilities. They were cute and showed great personality. Too bad there is no room for them to fit into a dog eat dog world. The zoos are there to ensure that these animals survive in a world where there is no longer any room for them.

well.... one might make a distinction here. sanctuaries are designed for animals to live free from interference from humans. Zoos are designed to educate humans about animals. elephants in the streets of bangkok are neither but more to the point they are not regulated or protected by laws or any institution here in Thailand because such institutions and laws are impotent.

comeon Kung, what came first chicken or the egg?

I thought this practice was illegal?

if it isn't it should be, don't you think?

where are the laws? the police?

you can't really blame the people feeding the elephant nor the elephant owners can you, if the practice is allowed to go on contrary to laws that exist.

If indeed they do exist, and if they dont, who then is responsible.

i agree i don't think a busy, hot, polluted street is the place for an Elephant to be at any time.

Sorry for being lazy to read every comment again, but each one is really long and it's time to better go to sleep.

I 100% didn't think it would help to feed elephant on the street, but I couldn't help it so I always feed them as much as I could if there is a chance and at every street I saw them, not just Sukhumvit. Because I feel sorry and pity for elephant though I know all the money that I pay for the food always go to their master. But it's not elephant fault, but human being who keep torture to animal. I wish some day there will be some serious organization or government would give a sincere helping hand to resolve this matter in a long run..... Amen....
