Raving in Thailand

in a word mate, no. The police have far to tight a rein for anything we would class as a 'rave'. Even full moons are chock a block with undercovers (and sneaky ones at that) though black and half moon parties not as bad. But everyhting in Bkk area pretty 'legal'; no k ridden mongers telling you they love you at 6am!!!!

So youre trying to say there is but i need to know the people who know the people.

tbh , the only sort of party you will find that anywhere resembles (and by that I mean in the way that a mouse resembles a giraffe) the raves you and me know are boring goa psy trance parties, full of 46 year old frenchmen with ponytails and fluoruescent trousers.

Closest I have seen was a black moon party on Pha Ngang - techno, house, electro and breakbeat, not a copper anywhere (due to some big bribes - god wish we had had that option in UK lol).

Bkk is about clubs - even the couple of afterparties I have played at were prone to police visits within an hour or so.

My best advice; take an i pod, drink 6 bottles of Thai red bull and shut your eyes.

If you look at some of the so called Thai rave forums, there is fek all posts and what there are can be anything up to 4 years old!!!

BKK would be great for raves ie the Fantazia, Dreamscape type lets face it Thais are a bunch of fcukheads who are always up for a party its a pity the govt suppresses this kind of fun as the old bill would make a fortune on the side.

Ive got to start behaving like a fully grown adult in February 09 so was looking for somewhere to do one last bit of raving before i get the pipe and slippers out, maybe i'll have to do a full moon party or black moon whatever that is.

The poncy clubs in BKK with cool dudes and 300 baht water dont appeal to me.

it's beginning to depress me how often i find myself saying "yeah, that doesn't happen anymore here", and raves or dance music parties is a good case in point.

when i first came here(lived samui/phang ngan 1992-1995), the full moon party was already seen as "past it", and the best parties were jungle parties, smaller independant beach parties and so on that tended to fall in the few days either side of the full moon party.

i was well into the club scene and parties in the uk before i came here and know what "a good rave" is, and i can say without a doubt that those beach and jungle parties were the best raves i ever went to anywhere.

great music, , fantastic atmosphere, great "substances", and NO fu*king PIG hassles. parties for fun, with thais and visiting farangs going spastic, often until mid afternoon the following day.

but it didn't take long for the avaricious, so called thai "police" to realise that there was plenty easy baksheesh to be made by busting unwitting tourists for the gear they had provided them with in the first place. it's a neat trick - shooting rich fish in a barrel you have put them in for profit!

in it's narrow minded, selfishness and total disregard for "the law", or "the people", i think it illustrates exactly what these arrogant, ineffective, swaggering bastards are all about. namely, f**k ethics, there's easy money to be made here.

i long for the day when they really start to get their collective come-uppance.

and iain_d's right, since the mid 90's or so there hasn't been an awful lot of action worth mentioning as a direct result.

still some good club nights in bkk especially at the "illicit" after hours clubs when they get a decent dj in. ironically these places are all owned or partly owned and totally controlled by the cops!

anyway that's my rant over - menospeakthai, what i wanted to say was you say you're going to be here a few months - why not have a go at organising one yourself?

i'll come :D

Putting my shoes on the correct feet is an accomplishment these days, organising something like this in mumbojumboland when i dont know anyone other then the unfortunate drunk that has to speak to me in whatever bar i frequent is well beyond my realm.

Im surprised some dried up ex-raver entreupreneur hasnt started something like this in Cambodia, there is definitely a market for it, and the plod out there seem less organised and just as corrupt and theyve a greater tollerance of naughty substances.

I'll dj!!

Joe's bang on. I first came over in 95, lugging a bag of tunes and not much else (mind you my French mate took his decks when he went - bugger that!!). There were good aprties to be had, usually by the waterfalls on samui or Pha Ngang.

If you wanted to do summat now, reckon it would eithe rhave to be up country or on a quiet island (that way not too many bribes to hand out!!)

SDome good parties meant to be happening in Laos and Vietnam - gonna check out Laos when over next...

hail to the oldskool massive Joe!!!

I call it rave music, there was good rave music and crap rave music it was all nice and simple, then they started naming it things like garage/ house/ techno/ Jungle etc.... and i got confused and started scratching myself.

I was born in 75 and went clubbing in 91 for the first time, im glad i got a taste of pills that worked and the fun friendly atmosphere when it was all still new and relatively untouched, as by 1995 it was fighting on the dancefloor and you needed several tablets to chase what you once needed only one for.

The young kids these days seem to enjoy themselves in clubs just they look silly with all that make up and hairspray and thats just the men.

Not a good example!!!

Met Bez once, many years ago and to be honest, have had more intelligent conversations with my 2 year old!!!

Why dont they use Bez in an anti drugs TV ad??

"Kids, this is what will happen to you if you do drugs..."

Give the bloke his due, his intention was to get through life without ever having to do a proper job.... and he has succeeded...... he's an inspiration to me.

I spent some time with him a couple summers back on Cornwall working on a project, seemed pretty over it all and vacant to me, still had a good laugh though.
