The New Woman in my Life

Ked and I added a new family member this weekend. Star came home with us Saturday afternoon. We had been talking about getting a pet for awhile. She was leaning towards a cat because cats are less trouble to take care of. I was leaning towards a dog because I wanted a pet that had a fun personality. On Saturday we were out running errands and I decided to swing by the local animal shelter and look at the animals. The Irvine animal shelter is a very nice place and is definitely set up

Kasikorn, OTP Passwords, and Online Banking

The other day I was getting ready to transfer some money from my Kasikorn Bank account to someone and it dawned on me that Kasikorn's online banking requires that you confirm the transaction by typing in a one-time-password that they send to you via SMS. I still have my AIS SIM card but I'm not even sure if it's authorized for international calls. Regardless, it seems like a pain in the ass to hunt down my AIS SIM every time that I want to do some online banking. If you find yourself in a

Follow up on World Moto Motorcycle Taxi Meter

Well, it's been almost a year since I posted this blog post about the problems that would face installing meters on motorcycle taxis. A quick look at the company website seems to indicate no forward traction on the idea (no partners, clients, deals signed, etc), links to a lot of old articles mentioning the device, and some quotes from people acknowledging the fact that people use motorcycle taxis (duh!).

Life in the US #1 AKA What I Did Over Christmas Vacation

I figured I would rip off Rob's number system to write about my adventures back home. Sorry Rob. Sue me. I didn't really have much time back after the wedding. We flew back to LA on Dec 4th and I had to be at work on Dec 5th. Ked wasted no time and had a job offered to her on the 6th or 7th. I picked her up on my lunch break and took her to a Thai restaurant near my office. I knew the owner was Thai because of the name on the business license hanging on the wall and told Ked to order

Returning to the scene of the crime

This post is inspired by Rob's and is also about adjusting life back in America but with the added twist of coming back to Thailand for holiday. I don't think I had the problems adjusting that Rob did. We've probably been out of the US for the same amount of time but his time was here in Thailand and I spent about half of the time in Europe before coming to Thailand. I sort of got used to a nomadic existence. Never owning more than I could pack in some suitcases and be off to somewhere els

12Call / AIS SMS Spam

Fortunately when I came back to Thailand my old 12Call mobile number was still active and I just popped in my SIM and was ready to go. I needed to get an internet package on the line so they didn't rape me on the access charges so I went to Telewiz in Emporium and paid 380 baht for 1GB of data and was on my way. Shortly after activating the internet package I started getting tons and tons of SMS spam from 12Call. Every 10 or 20 minutes I was getting a new SMS in Thai offering me some sort of

Shark Diving in the Bahamas

I'm the funny looking guy with the yellow fins and big yellow snorkel. Part 1 is a little slow as it's our first dive just swimming around with the sharks. Part 2 is the second dive where they feed the sharks.

Tear Gas Defense

Thinking of "occupying" something? Maybe you just plan on a random clash with riot police. Whatever your plans, here's how to deal with getting gassed.

RIP Peder

Many on TF know Peder. He wasn't real active online but he's been a fixture in the Bangkok expat community for many years. Rob called me this morning and told me Peder died last night. RIP Peder. I always enjoyed the time we spent together hanging out.

Day Dreaming

I gotta say, I've had worse office views before. Here are some shots from my office. That flat area beyond the tennis courts (yes, that is a tennis court on the roof) is the John Wayne International Airport which is a smaller airport so larger, noisy planes cannot land. It's nice watching them land all day. They come from the right hand side East and land heading West. They take off heading West so I don't get to see them taking off except for when they taxi to the East end of the run

How many people do you know like this?

http://www.theonion.com/articles/woman-always-really-excited-to-be-in-whatever-rela,2529/ I always crack up when my friends post this kind of stuff. They try to pretend that whatever has just happened is a good thing even when it's obviously painful or bad. For instance, had someone pull the "give me what I want or I quit" thing and called their bluff. Now all of their status updates are about how they're glad they quit, they're receiving gazillions of new offers, they're enjoying their li

Hi! Managers: Is empowerment right for Asia?

I was reading this article in The Nation today and it just strikes me because the author is so in denial about exactly what is holding many Asian countries back in the world marketplace. I do believe the author is correct in pointing out that not all employees can be empowered. However, the reasoning for it is not exactly well thought out. Many Asian countries are based on a patronage system in which jobs, perks, bonuses, promotions, etc are all given out based on undying loyalty to some

Diving With All Star Divers And Ensogo

Ked has mentioned to me many times that one of her dreams is to try scuba diving. I'm a scuba diver and even brought most of my expensive gear over to Thailand when I moved (reg, BCD, etc) so it seems like something we can enjoy doing together. Unfortunately, she had some ear problems when she was younger and before we shelled out 15,000 baht or so for a Open Water Diver course I wanted to make sure that she could handle clearing her ears underwater. If you can't clear your ears you can't dive.
