What's the different between "sea" and "ocean"? Can anyone give a better answer than Ocean is bigger than sea? What's the difinition of them? I was talking to my colleague about IELTS test, it possible that the test would ask a question like this.  I can't tell even in Thai so how can I answer in English when IELTS test you have to write only, no choice. I should have listen to my teacher more when I studied a bit of geography in high school.

Ocean: (partial entry. The whole entry is very long) The sheet of salt water

which surrounds the great land masses of the earth; it is divided into several extensive portions, each known as an ocean, and altogether covers 71% of the earth's surface.

Sea: (full entry) One of the smaller divisions of the oceans, especially if partially enclosed by land, e.g., Mediterranean Sea, North Sea; a large expanse of inland salt water, even if completely landlocked, e.g., Caspian Sea.

The name is also loosely applied to the great mass of salt water which covers much of the earth's surface.

You've heard of "one world?" Well, technically, all the world's oceans and seas are part of one continuous mass of seawater. But because the ocean is so big, humans have divided it up and named the different parts. There are five oceans and several dozen seas.* Seas are usually smaller than oceans and are partially enclosed by land. But otherwise, they're exactly the same thing.

* While some scientists claim there are five oceans, others claim there are only four or even three oceans.

I cant argue with any of that :P

Although seamen of long ago are popularly known to have stated "I've sailed the seven seas," there really wasn't a good definition of those seas. However, today, the seven seas are the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, Indian, Antarctic, and Arctic Ocean.

how cute, thanks for all answers... Most of answers here, I found them myself earlier but it doesnt describe the different but what Ocean and Sea mean and even I repeat reading them, they sound just the same... I want ones that can describe all in one word... not the original definition which always confusing.. (no any definition that easy to understand anyway) So what's the different? Does Ocean mean more than one sea connected? Always more than one sea? This is what I dont know. Think I need Atlast as well.

I think Ocean enclosed by more than one sea becoz it's big and we know salt water cover more than 2 of 3 of world's surface so it possible that it will connected to each other but just different in geography make it different? (what are those different in geography way anyway? lol)

I wonder if anyone can answer this right away without searching online?

I am George : Appreciated your answer very much... I think that the best so far.

p'Nu : Thanks kaa..

I should change answer, imagine if you are doing the test and one question asking you what's the different between Sea and Ocean. What you gonna answer in 5-10 mins times since test will not have only one question and limitation of time plus no internet or any source.

Let's try?
