BANGKOK: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 struck western Laos near the border with Thailand on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey, rocking buildings as far away as Bangkok.

The quake was recorded at a depth of 33 kilometres (20 miles) in a region that is also close to the borders with China and Myanmar.

People in the Thai capital Bangkok reported buildings shaking.

A provincial official in Chiang Rai, a town in northern Thailand about 100 kilometres from the epicentre, said the quake shook the region but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Residents in nearby Chiang Mai, a city popular with tourists, said people ran onto the streets as buildings swayed.

Chiang Mai's mayor Boonlert Buranuthkorn said it was the most serious quake he had felt, but he also had no reports of any injuries or damage.

"We are still searching, but we have found no damage so far," he told AFP.
