Shameful
As Burma's immediate neighbour, Thailand's complete silence vis-a-vis the ongoing protests in Rangoon and the violent break-up by riot police is appalling and a big letdown. It would not have been surprising were this attitude adopted by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is known for his business links with the Burmese junta. But for the Surayud government, which claims high ethical standards, it is incomprehensible why it does not even have the courage to issue a statement pleading for restraint.Though unlike Burma's Buddhist monks who have a history of democratic protest, the Thai clergy can _ and should _ lend moral support to the Burmese monastic community without offending monastic rules, by at least chanting prayers for peace and non-violence in Burma. As a responsible nation and people, Thailand and the Thai people cannot afford to remain silent as the Burmese junta are about to slaughter their own people, whose only crime is to cry for freedom. Our silence can only be construed as the guilt of a conspirator in the crimes being perpetrated against the Burmese people. From the Bangkok Post
