Well, I am now in LP. It was lovely and hot when I arrived yesterday, but today is cold AND I have no warm clothes with me, so a bit uncomfortable.

The town is very pretty and some of the grandeur is slowly being brought back to life. Buildings are being restored to UNESCO standards, and lots of small hotels and guesthouses are opening up.

I stayed in an old wooden thai style house last night. Comfortable, but dark. Have now moved into a small hotel. I visited the temples today and took lots of photos, but because it is a dark cloudy day, the light isn't that great. Cannot even get a sunset shot of the Mekong.

Tomorrow I am going to the Elephant school/orphanage, where they train and look after the elephants that they rescue from the Lao logging camps. After we are going on an elephant trek in the jungle.

Lets just hope I don't fall off. Its a long way down :-))

Will post some photos when I get a chance.

farangy: I pre-booked, but still has problems because of Chinese New Year. Have seen lots of people walking around looking for accommodation, but I think that there are rooms to be found.

O'Neil: I don't know about inexpensive way (bus). I flew with Bangkok Airways, straight into Luang Prabang. About an hour I think. (Remember to bring photo for visa, or pay $1 for passport scan.)
