how to recognise a stroke

recently one my closest friends lost her mother because of a stroke which started simply with her collapsing and almost instantly regaining her compsure... this happened midday. At first it was thought maybe the heat but to be sure later on they went to the hospital but regular check in and not emergency and just to say she "passed out" and had felt light headed. She was dead by the morning. Another close friend had a stroke in his mid 20's but was luckily around trained people and suffered effects he will live with for the rest of his life...but he still has one and the effects have been life altering ending his police career and other things but it could've been much much worse!

So how to recognise a stroke and thus maybe save a life.

My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read especially women who often do not think they are at risk for heart disease like men.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Just have to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE(Coherently) (I.e. It is sunny out today)

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

So remember: Smile, Talk, and Raise.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 (or the local emergency# immediately) !! and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Signs and symptoms varies. Depends which type of stroke. There are insiduous and abrupt onset.

Most often, the person and the people around the person may not know that he/ she is already suffering from stroke, So it's very difficult to tell.

But here the S/Sx:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body).

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech.

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

People who are Diabetic, Hypertensive, Smokers, Obese/ Overweight are at high risks. One doesn't have to be old to suffer from Stroke...Lately, I've noticed that there are increase numbers of Stroke Patients aged 20+. (hmmm at least where I once worked).

Prevention is still the best treatment.
