The prospect for Asean economic community lessons from European integration.

by dan_bkk (under my real name of course:)

Bradford 2005.

Department: University of Bradford. Department of Peace Studies. Dissertations.

Description: 60p.

Theses Notes: M.A. dissertation. Typescript.

Summary: This dissertation is about the ASEAN economic integration and the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The economic integration has existed in ASEAN since 1992 with the ASEAN Free Trade Area. However, the ideas behind further economic integration happened in 1997 as a direct respond to the East Asian Financial Crisis earlier in the year. The ASEAN Vision 2020 (AV-2020) is an ambitious declaration that the ASEAN member states agreed upon during the time of crisis. It envisions a prosperous and secure concert of South East Asian nations by the year 2020. At the ASEAN (Bali) Concord II declaration in Bali, Indonesia in 2003, ASEN has set up a framework for the creation of three new organizations, as recommended by the AV-2020. These three organisations are 1) ASEAN Security Community (ASC), 2) ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and 3) ASEAN Sociocultural Community (ASCC) by the year 2020. These three organisations will serve as foundations for the concert of South East Asian nations in the future. This dissertation will examine the process of ASEAN economic integration and the prospect of the creation of the ASC by the year 2020 in particular. It will do so by using lessons and experience of the European economic integration which special emphasis on the European Economic Community.
