Upon reading the recent Taxi Mafia journal entry, I recalled an experience that I had there in BKK approximately a year ago. I was trying to catch a taxi near Asoke and Sukumvit to take me out to Rama 9 road kinda near Bang Kapi where I was staying with a friend kinda late one night. Well, I flagged one down and off we went, the meter flag was down and I was kinda explaining in broken Thai and English where I needed to get to. Ya know, leo sai (right), leo kwah (left), (think I got that right...). Anyways the gist of all this was that the taxi driver was a Thai woman and she actually spoke very good english! I was trying to impress her of course with my expertise in speaking Thai, didn't really need to though, like I said her English was good enough.

Has anybody else there ever run into a woman taxi driver there in BKK? I thought it was pretty novel myself since it was the only time in all my visits there that this had ever occured.

And no, I don't think she was a Katoey, she was rather average...

I've also had a lady taxi driver one time, and she was very nice and friendly, and actually a damn good driver.... none of the normal death-defying driving techniques that make you think your riding in an "accident waiting to happen"

Female taxi drivers are rare but nowadays there are a lot of woman motorcycle taxis drivers. The strange thing is, I actually feel safer going with with them more than men, as the woman drive slower and aren't pissed up on Chang.

I've had female drivers on three separate occasions, actually. Very polite, and far more careful than their Mario Andretti and Red Bull counterparts!

i just had one on my way back from the airport last wednesday! it was cool, cus it was really late (like 11 pm) and it was great to have a woman taxi driver!!
