Sayat
Sayat, or Golden Eagle hunting, is Kazakhstan's national sport. Berkutchi, the golden eagle hunters, arrive from all over the country for an annual Sayat competition in Karkaralinsk, central Kazakhstan. The eagles compete in a hunting contest and are judged on how well they can catch and kill their prey.Hunting is a lifelong profession. More often than not, it is hereditary. A Golden Eagle will weigh up to 15 pounds, grow up to 3 feet tall and have a wingspan of up to 7 feet. A trainer's relationship with his eagle will often last for the entirety of the bird's 15 to 20 year lifespan. It is a relationship so intense that a trainer will have to go for long periods without sleep, in order to tend to the young bird. For weeks, the growing bird is rendered sightless under a hood until the bird is completely dependent on its master.A traditional saying is maintained in Kazakhstan. It states that as a man trains his eagle, so too does the eagle train his man. According to Kazakh proverb, all real men should own a killing Golden Eagle!!!
