Psychologists say keeping a diary can make you happier.

"Writing seems to help the brain regulate emotion unintentionally. Whether it's writing things down in a diary, writing bad poetry, or making up song lyrics that should never be played on the radio, it seems to help people emotionally,"

"Men seemed to benefit from writing about their feelings more than women, and writing by hand had a bigger effect than typing."

"Men tend to show greater benefits and that is a bit counterintuitive. But the reason might be that women more freely put their feelings into words, so this is less of a novel experience for them. For men it's more of a novelty."

I tried forcing myself to write a weekly journal on TF. I managed to do it for about a year and half, maybe two at most. It didn't really make me any happier (I think) but it did force me to discipline myself and reflect on my week (or another chosen topic). In the end, I found it too demanding and felt I had no more inspiration, so now I only write when I have enough time and ideas to make it interesting for me and others.

I disagree with you nzguy, I don't think there are any more messed up writers, songwriters and poets than members of other professions (businessman, teacher, etc.). It's just that they are better at sharing their emotions and feelings while others keep it all in. Also they live in a more tolerant work environment than others. My guess is if everyone was as good as them at sharing their emotions, we would have less mass murderers on the planet.

I disagree every listened to comedians? Those are some messed up people. I read once that comedians were the worlds most dysfunctional people who learned to make others laugh at how sad they are.
