Ong Bak 2 - review
Hey martial arts fans! Are ready to get your guts kicked out?
Wuuuu-Taaaang! So Wu-Tang.. the Wu-Tangiest!
Mark my words, this will be placed among the greatest martial arts films of all time. I'm talkin' Master Killer, Fists of Fury, Drunken Master, Once Upon a Time in China, etc.
I don't want to get you too hyped, so caution; this has nothing to do with Ong Bak except that it stars Tong Jaa and there's a cliffhanger ending a la Reloaded.
Tony Jaa is RZA sharp in all his movements. They set up some nice bits with the obligatory training sequence where he learns various styles + weapons. He starts off with a kenjutsu battle; strategic, refined, precise; then a kung-fu challenge; strong, fast, methodical and finally a muay Thai scrap; wild, brutal, chaotic.
It's obvious this film was made by a martial artist; there is very little dialogue, the camera work showcases the fighter's movements (instead of obscuring them) and the fights have a purpose in advancing the story.
This is Tony Jaa's crowning achievement, thus far. He is such a unique force in the universe I only hope he can control his limitless power + avoid Bruce/Brandon Lee's fate.
One last note on casting, it's so refreshing to see child actors who actually look like the adult stars they're supposed to be portraying.
