Richard Heinberg of Post Carbon Institute said it best: “This is what the end of the oil age looks like. The cheap, easy petroleum is gone; from now on, we will pay steadily more and more for what we put in our gas tanks—more not just in dollars, but in lives and health, in a failed foreign policy that spawns foreign wars and military occupations, and in the lost integrity of the biological systems that sustain life on this planet. The only solution is to do proactively, and sooner, what we will end up doing anyway as a result of resource depletion and economic, environmental, and military ruin: end our dependence on the stuff.”

The spill won't change much. Yes, people are a bit more aware about the dangers now, but they completely forget about that when stepping into their SUV's and don't want to carpool because it's too inconvenient.

It's up to the auto-industry and governments to start the change.

Appreciate comments. We have long road ahead before we rid ourselves of fossil fuel dependance. We need to start now. The center of life has been the automobile and it's time to change that.

Because of the oil spill in gulf, the Senate is close to passing The American Power Act which will start to put price on carbon generated by electric utilities. This will change the private sector attitude toward investment and level the playing field for Clean Energy. Close old coal dirty plants, build new cleaner natural gas plants, 3rd generation bio-fuels, more Renewables, smart grid, electric cars and increase energy efficiency in buildings. Plus, create about 200,000 Clean Energy jobs per year.

Many Cities and States already have Clean Energy programs that surpass USA climate change goals. It's time for the Federal Gov. to get in sync with the people.

Once USA puts a price on carbon the rest of the world will take notice, especially China & India.

I don't think we should be using natural gas either - its just putting off the inevitable - we need alternative fuels right now. One of the best would have to be Hydrogen - used in fuel cells, it is absolutely non-pollutng. Batteries for electric cars are incredibly inefficient, and the chemicals used are hugely polluting - imagine millions of vehicles the world over relying on batteries only - and a battery is not the anser - it has to be charged - so somewhere else there is going to be something that has to generate the electicity, and that something is a power plant - what does it run on? Why are we not building proper solar power stations like those in the Mojave Desert or elsewhere in places where the sun shines a lot? Why are we not going for this in a big way? Money! It will be expensive... Oh? So a car and all the fuel and repairs etc are cheaper than a horse and cart and some hay? Of course its expensive - more so at the outset - so the earlier we get our finger out, the better!

Grezzzy-How many sq. meters of flat roof space in Bangkok? Millions!!! You get about 100 Watts per sq. meter for rooftop solar. So many Gig-A-Watts of solar power available in Bangkok.

Probably enough Solar power to make Hydrogen Onsite for all Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses, FEDX trucks, BMA city vehicles, and Taxicabs. And Hydrogen Electrolyzers and Hydrogen Fuel-Cells are becoming more affordable with advances in technology. City of Berkley in California has a demo project "Solar powered Hydrogen Fuel Cell City Buses"
