While I was waiting for the disaster in my married to be resolved which may ended up with divorce. I started to look for a job. As I started to feel very depress and worthless. Plus, I was not sure if I would get anything from a divorce. I have to stand on my feet.

I applied for serveral jobs. Most are those I familiar with, hospitality job. Even I saw "age not over 35". But damn, does it mean they prevent me to work as I am 44?

These days, you have to spend at least 2hrs to fill the application form. Doing the test for English skill, math, your attitudes about works and colleagues and others psychology questions. Those are2hrs. Then you have to wait for a results and return fir an interview later if they considered hiring you. And it does not mean that you would get a job if you had an interview

At 44 with Higher Diploma in Tourism Industry. I don't think I have much choice. The biggest problem seems to be my age! Second is no Bachelor degree. I worked with this field for 20yesrs. But at this point, standing by 24hrs a day, answering the phone, solving any sort of problem are not what I want I life. I want a job I enjoy doing it. Pays me enough to cover my expenses and hopeful to save some. But

Experience is nothing comparing to "image" when it comes to hostility job.

Last week, I had a coffee at Au Bon Pain Sukhumvit. I saw an add on Post today looking for a personal assistant for a travel agency. I feel for sure that my qualification may fulfill the guy's need. The guy gave gmail address as for contact. I start to have doubt. I told my husband about it. He sent me think link from Stickman, very interesting.

After I read it. I think I better forget about it and find other job. Anything which offer a chance to people at my age. Sigh!

Freaky stuff that that stickman reader reported, and yeah, you need to be very careful about who you interview with and where they want to meet you.

Sounds like you are smart and well-educated. I'm sure you've thought about going into business for yourself at some point. What happened with that, and why did you decide to not stay with the idea?

Sounds a lot like how you used to hire girls for Fotobook. :-)

Joey,

I would recommend trying to find jobs with companies owned by farangs. I think we're less concerned about degrees and such and more interested in whether people can do the job (which it sounds like you can).

It's so ridiculous nowadays. They want a bachelor's degree just to work in some boutique hand bag shop. Why? What did university do to prepare one to sell hand bags? LOL

But I do know that farang business owners are constantly complaining about the applicants they get for job openings. If you asked your average farang business owner whether he would prefer a job applicant from the best Thai university or one that understands farang culture (especially work ethic) they'll pick the one that understands farang culture every time.

And due to my experiences I can fully understand them! Out of the many people of the small construction business we hired for various works to do on our house, only one was working in a satisfactory way. All the others needed constant surveillance and still did things in the wrong way, sometimes up to a ridiculous point. During the construction of our house, the foreman, although claiming he had been working in some farang companies, was not able to instruct his workers in the most simple way. Why did we need to move one of the bathroom windows for five(!) times until it was where the plan indicated? Why three out of five power outlets of the aircondition were on the wrong place after I pointed out the correct spots with a red mark on a b/w copy only the afternoon before? And these are only two out of a very big bunch of bad experiences I had and that included floor ceramics destroyed by guys who were mounting our kitchen working desk, cigarette butts all over the place, people demanding(!) Red Bull instead of the offered Coke etc...

This is a very sad point because I know that there are also decent people out there (and I am sure that Joey is one of those) like the one constructor I mentioned in the previous paragraph (but unfortunately, he changed his phone number and we could not find him anymore for other jobs to do) who would perform a good job but due to bad experiences with others, their chances for a decent job are limited or even close to zero.

This is one point that also has hit Central Europe about 25 years ago, maybe not to the ridiculous extent as in Thailand. On one hand, politicians are claiming that we need more academics and on the other hand, job offers for academics get lower and lower - both in qualification and salary terms.

When I left school more than 30 years ago, we had about 3% academics and companies would fight for A-graduates to fill positions that nowadays only are filled with people out of the 15% academic pool we have today - but only after a fierce recruiting process.

Maybe in Thailand, employers expect graduates to be more responsible and fitted with more common sense than non-graduates, but I don't know the exact reasons. Still I think that an interview quickly can reveal points like general approach to work, punctuality and up to a certain extent accuracy of work no matter if the applicant has a degree or not.

I'd looked for job a couple month while i'm waiting for my visa granted and i got 9-10 job interview , i went to Rayong and i be asked if i can reduce my expected salary down one or two thousands, although i like a work place enviromence but it's too far from town so I think they probably selected someone who agreed to accept lessen payment. And i end up worked in bkk which i quit later on after almost two months coz poor management. I was 40 last year and you are a few years older and i think you can find a decent job coz your english is good and experienced. As long as u keep looking you will find......and some company no require age limit. Good luck and Happy New Year.

Thanks for all comment. I just take a partime job at the Isan Restaurant near my apartment. No commitment. I told them I would work 5days/week. It starts from 8pm to 2am they give me 250/day.

The job details is, to open music for the customer to sing, Karaoke. Sometimes I have to sing to. Actually I used to work there few years ago before I went to USA, just for kick. It's not a decent job. But I am so tired of feeling depress at home. While I am waiting for an interview, at least I can make extra money.

AT first I thought about working at 7-11 that someone I know own it in Sukhumvit 13. But the wage is only 35B/hour. Compare with the partime job I have now, it seems to be less. So, I thought I would do this job for awhile. Once I get day time job, I just walk out.

I hope something good come along soon.
