Broadband anyone?

Last weekend I set off with my friend Anny (monsteranny) to MBK to check out Hutch wireless broadband. I was pretty well-prepared since I had already checked out the details available at the Hutch web site (http://www.hutch.co.th). So in short, I signed the contract.

Hutch changes promotions about as often as a baby?s diapers but when I signed up (one year contract, month-to-month thereafter) the cost of unlimited broadband was 890 baht/month BUT for real unlimited, you must also sign up for the 299 baht call plan which is okay because I?ll call some of my friends from my Hutch phone. Under this plan the first minute is 3 baht, then 25 satang per minute thereafter. And a bonus ? using 1-2-Call I can almost never reach my friends who use Orange during evenings. But if I call them on Hutch, no problem!

I did NOT buy the needed mobile handset from Hutch (Sanyo SCP-588 or SCP-550) which would have cost 5,900/6,900 baht respectively. Instead, I bought the mobile handset secondhand (easy to find), and here?s what you need and how it breaks down:

Sanyo SCP-550 (secondhand) 2,200

Desktop holder (charger) 200

USB cable 400

TOTAL 2,800

In short, I am basically paying 80 baht per month more for broadband than I was for dialup, and needed to invest 2,800 as a one-time cost for the hardware.

Is it worth it? To be fair, browsing web pages isn?t that much different than dialup. For example, if you?re browsing journal entries in TF, you won?t notice a lot of difference. But suppose you open a journal with photos. Wow! The pics load faster than you can look at them! So yes, in my opinion it?s worth it, and I think Hutch gives you a very simple alternative for fast internet access.

Thanks to May (filurina) for suggesting it!

Not to mention that you save that 3 baht per call if you use dialup!

I really prefer broadband; it's faster, more convenient (not use your land line - if you ever use it!) and more stable.

You've made the right decision! Congratulations! :-)

Well it really depends if you're a heavy user of the internet. Also if you're fond of downloading music and large files it really can be helpful and value for money at the end of the day :)

Yep, I'm a heavy user. And I don't download that much or that often, but with broadband, when I do it's awesome! 5 years from now we'll be saying it sucks but for now it's cool!

Gigabyte: When I said that the net difference between dialup and broadband is 80 baht per month, I had already factored in the 3 baht per call using a land line.
