I'm so happy that the Thai authorities have decided to do this. Basically, there were a few foreign tourists (the white skinned kind), that were stabbed by members of the Thai mafia. Chalerm then decided to rid the country of all Thai mafia in the tourism sector. I assume that he will shut down their offices within the coming months, and take away the majority of their funding. I think this is a great decision by Chalerm. Once he flips the switch off on the Thai mafia, Phuket will become a beautiful and welcoming place for everyone. Lets all celebrate!

PHUKET: An expat was behind a move to bring three jet-skis from another province onto a Phuket beach, a meeting heard today. Jet-ski numbers continued to grow on Phuket and there was no control, officials were told. Anusorn Salea, President of the Phuket Jet-Ski Association, said that he had been told that another 10 jet-skis would be brought to Bang Tao beach, north of Patong on Phuket's holiday coast. Although an MoU several years ago limited the number of jet-skis on Phuket to 219, Phuripat Theerakulpisut, Chief of Phuket's Marine Office 5, said he could confirm there were 286 jet-skis on Phuket. [Other officials believe there are more than 300.] Khun Phuripat said he would ask the officials in the province of Samutprakharn to withdraw the registration of the three Bang Tao jet-skis. But he said that Marine Office 5 had no control over the number of jet-skis registered on Phuket. He could not reject those who wished to sign up on the island, he said. Senior Phuket administrator Chaiwat Tapee said that jet-skis appeared to be out of control on Phuket, with numbers increasing and jet-skis appearing in places that were not supposed to have jet-skis. Khun Anusorn, who operates a Bang Tao group although most of Phuket jet-skis are based in Patong, said he was concerned about the different groups now operating Bang Tao's 38 jet-skis. ''Some people are carrying guns and some are mafia,'' he told the meeting at Provincial Hall in Phuket City. Khun Phuripat said he would check out the situation, but wondered how Khun Anusorn would feel if he was regularly forced to pay heavy fines as a result. Police from Tachatchai and Thalang Stations were present at today's meeting. Khun Chaiwat said he would call a meeting involving all stakeholders as soon as possible. More...

So, the TF mafia does it really exist?
-
I've only been to Thailand once two months ago, but the local Thai people always asked if we were "Mafia". I did a little research into what's going on and it looks like the Russians are starting to stake their presence there and in some areas (in Pattaya particular) the Russian Mafia seems to be staking their claim. Pardon my limited experience there, but if this the case, what is being done to destroy this influence on this great country. In my opinion, corruption, and any organized crime units in particular, are cancers on any society and need to be cut out before they can spread. Can anyone comment on this phenomenon? I am very curious to know the truth.
